SAFE WOOD FOR PERCHES

Gillian Willis provided the following list of wood that can be used safely for bird perches. All branches should be throughly cleaned before putting it in with a bird.

Safe branches for birds include the following (there are other safe woods, but these are the most commonly used for perches) :

Apple Dogwood
Arbutus Elm
Ash Fir
Aspen Hawthorn
Beech Larch
Birch Pine
Cottonwood Poplar
Crabapple Willow
DO NOT use apricot, peach, prune or nectarine.
These trees all belong to the Prunus species and like cherry, contain cyanogenic glycosides which can release cyanide if ingested.
