How do you deal with a cage dominant bird

Postby Leea on Tue Feb 27, 2007 2:32 pm

I am baby sitting a macaw who is cage dominant. How do you change that?

I was changing his water bottle from the outside and he was outside. He came over I thought to investigate. So I let him touch and taste the screwdriver. I thought things were OK until he bit me, a scratch that drew blood. His mommy says she has a problem too.

thanks
Lee

Move him away from the cage when you go to service it. Most will try to protect their cage (home).

Darlene is right always remove him from cage- with stick ect- then feed and praise, give foot toy he will then associate being a good bird with person near his cage- doesnt take long to change that behaviour but it takes routine, so he gets use to it.
