NEWBIE - Macaw Wanted

Postby shadowspooh on Thu Feb 22, 2007 10:01 pm

Hi I am new to this site but need some help in locating a Macaw, preferabley B&G, Green Wing or Catalina. My friend who recently past away from Ovarian Cancer and I visit the elderly, mentally challanged, and less fortunate in their homes, facilities, group homes etc. My friend owned a B&G Macaw, but since her passing her family has relocated Annie Okely (the macaws name) to another state. I have a miniature dachshund female that is occassionally in a wheelchair, that is part of the therapy. I also own a miniature donkey jack named AJ, and a miniature Mare who is dwarf that goes to these homes. The Macaw use to ride on the Donkey, or the miniature horse. She would swing a little rope, wear a small hat, and have a little kerchief around her neck. It was a hit with these under priviledged people. Annie would also play basket ball, and lay on her back for scratches. The mentally challenged children really miss her. I am an experienced bird handler. My mother use to be a breeder of cockateils, budgies, love birds, conures, and african greys. She also use to handfeed birds for a local breeder in Jefferson, Oregon. I have also bred, and handfed parrots here in Oregon about 20 years ago. So, what I need is a Macaw that is roughly 2-3 months old, would take an older bird if it was very well socialized, and tame, but prefer to handfeed, and train the bird myself. The problem is I only have $450 and cannot afford $1000, or more. So, if anyone out there is willing to donate, and possibly write off this expense as a charitable donation please contact me. The bird will have an extremely great home. I work out of my home as a Medical Record Coder so I am home all day. Please help me locate that special bird. The bird can have a handicap such as toes missing, or crooked feet, as long as it can get around that is fine as well. Thanks for your help in Advance.

How would you be able to provide vet care for a bird?

Where there is a way there is a will. Nothing comes for free. If we thought that way, Hubby would have saved 20,000.00 in the last year

If you can't afford to buy the bird, you can't afford to own one. The bird is the cheapest. Then you have a cage, for a macaw has to be big and sturdy. Food (pellets, seed ,nuts, fresh fruits and veggies) vet care, and the toys! A bird should have toys to stimulate them. They are constantly destroyed and need to be restrung and/or replaced.

Darlene is correct- It costs 425.00 yr for vet, cages are 1000.00+ for correct size. I spend 200 on perches and 150.00 month on nuts, fruots, and pellets, water bottle was 35.00,toys to start were 245.00 and then I amke my own 55.00 month. This is per Macaw! and we have 4

I guess I should not have joined this group. You people are RUDE. I am sorry I posted. I can afford to take care of a bird. I just do not have
$1000 just laying around. I do not use credit cards, as they can get you into trouble in a big hurry, although I do get plenty of offers, that make great fire starters. I am willing to trade a AMHR mini horse when they arrive, and after they are weaned. I have 2 mini stallions, 1 large paint mare, 1 mini jack donkey, 1 mini jenny, and 5 mini mares. They all require feed, grain, carrots, apples, toys, vet expences, hoof care every 6-8 weeks at $65-$100/horse. wormingevery 6 weeks and vaccinating yearly with boosters. They do get fed, and taken care of properly, as would a macaw. So, just because someone doesn't have the funds up front, does not mean that they are not able to take care of an animal properly. I will not post here again.

Well then, save your money until you have enough to buy a bird. Watch your newspaper, Craig's list, Find a pet ( I think that's the name), local vets Any place you can think of that someone might place an ad for a free or low cost one.
We don't know the people who post here and can only go by what is in the post.

Oh be serious, Ive been caring for birds for over 20 yrs, before I did horses and went to Jr Olympics and studied Dressage in Europe. It costs and when you post that you need a hand out- well that just says Cant afford to take care. Do as we all have and save, Id rather eat bread and water than have my birds go without- or not pay what people want to place them in a better situation. Im sorry if we didnt post that we all have a 1000-2000 macaw to hand over to a stranger for 450.00. Go volunteer at a rescue and pay their fee for one- I hope you get a cage at least 36-40 wide, with at lkeast 4 different texture perches, and toys to keep him chewing, and well checks need to be done yearly. So Meaness has nothing to do with it- WE all care about birds on this board. No one is evil- I tell it as it is Im 42 and life is to short to blow sunshine up anyone @$$, BS walks.
