Female behaving strangely

Postby Jool's Mom on Tue Sep 09, 2008 1:13 pm

My female tiel Julie is about 2 or 3 years old. I don't know for sure because she was a rescue. I think she is going through courtship behavior, but I don't know. She bends over and sticks her rear end in the air, and turns in circles, all the while making odd little singing noises. I am guessing that she is in the mood, but I don't know for sure, since we've never had a female before! What causes this behavior, and is there any way to stop it, or is it normal for a female? We've had her four months now, and she hasn't done this before the past few days. Her last owners said she laid eggs a lot, but she hasn't since we've had her. Her stools are very loose lately. I don't know much about female birds, other than that they do lay eggs sometimes, and are generally quieter than the males. Julie is very quiet except for this week. When she isn't around us, she cries a lot, and is very upset. She is less upset when we have her, but when we pat her head or scritch her cheeks, she starts that odd little dance. Any suggestions or ideas? Sorry to ask so many silly questions but I just don't know anything.

That's very normal behavior for a female feeling nesty. You'll want to look back through some older posts in this forum for ideas for altering her environment to help her stay healthy. I'll check back at a less hectic moment to be sure you've found the information you need. MFids' posts on this subject are always very thorough. Use the Advanced Search (upper right corner) to search on her posts for the word "egg" -- then use titles to guide you to the most relevant threads.

This is normal female nesting behavior. She wants to mate and she wants to have babies. The loose droppings mean she has an egg developing. There is a good chance she will lay one. Make sure she has calcium (a cuttle bone or calcium powder in her food) Also fresh collard greens help too :D

It does sound like some nesting behavior to me, although I'm not sure if it's male or female nesting behavior.
