Trip to the Vet

Postby Luna Bella on Wed Oct 01, 2008 12:07 am

I took Luna to the vet for a checkup yesterday. She seems to favor her right wing sometimes by holding it up in as unusual position. He said her range of motion was good and she didn't scream like a banshee in pain when he manipulated her - only like a really annoyed tiel!!

She weighed in at 100 and he said her weight is perfect, mouth looked good and poop is fine too. She loves to roam the floor and inspect everything on it  , and since I will not win the housekeeper of the year award I thought it would be a good idea to get her checked out.

She is not like other birds I read about! She spends time on the floor - by choice and she stays very low to the floor on the cage if not on the floor during most of the day. I have a small ladder with a mirror and beads on the top of it and she loves to hang out on the first or second rung and looks out the window. Even when the cage door is open she would stay there instead of being on the top of the cage!

Crazy - but lovable bird

Jo

Congratulations on the good vet exam results. Always a relief, isn't it? One of my lutino girls suddenly had a drooping wing a couple months ago. I gave it a day to heal and then took her to the vet. Like yours, mine probed and found no broken bone, thank goodness. He said it was probably a soft tissue injury that would heal, but that only an xray could rule out the possibility of a break in a small bone. Since there's no treatment for that, I opted to wait and hoped she'd heal. She hasn't, but it seems to worry only me. She's as playful and spunky as ever, and has been all along, except for a few hours after the vet visit. She still flies all day every day, and regularly has sex with her beloved. But the wing still droops. Darn.

Wild 'tiels are ground feeders, so it's not so unusual that Luna enjoys being low and floor walking. Because it's so dangerous in most of our homes, most 'tiels are trained to not stay on the floor. But, without such training, many would probably be more like Luna. Mine spend a lot of time down there and get a special thrill from nibbling on my Crocs ... en masse. Makes it really difficult to walk around

I hope Luna heals quickly!

Nice to know she isn't the only floor walker out there - everyone I meet and most on here say how their birds stay as high as possible in the cage and go low when they get "nesty". She's almost 3 (boy does time fly!!) and never laid an egg :D :D :D Sometimes she does do the little chirpy thing with the butt in the air but only for a minute or so, I try to distract her asap.
