Breeding Princess of wales

Postby kneener on Sun Aug 24, 2008 10:26 pm

I've been having a problem with my breeder Princesses. After each clutch they get sick with poopie vents. Any suggestions? I've tryed Baytril and apple cider vinegar in their water, no luck. Thanks for any info.

Have you taken them in to an avian vet to see what the problem is?

Yes I've taken them to the vet. She hasn't really offered much info as to why this keeps happening but has perscribed baytril each time. They're fine after their treatment, but as soon as they have a clutch one or the other gets a poopie vent. So I am stumped.

I guess a better question may be, has the vet done any fecal tests or a CBC/full blood panel? I really don't have an idea of why this is happening if it's only happening after a clutch but not before, unless it's just due to stress.

an Avian vet would be a good idea. I would assume that this vet would be asking you how much soft foods you are providing and how long you are leaving them with the birds? Lots of very wet foods are going to lead to very wet stools. Food left too long goes bad. How often do you change the water source when your birds are breeding? How often do you scrub your water cups or take your water tubes and nibs apart and lines if you are on an auto matic water system for a good cleaning?

Lots of places for birds under stress to sucome to illness that they maybe able to fight off when not breeding.

Do they actually get sick? Or is it just loose stools? And if so, when does it start? How long does it last? Is there a difference in the colour of the stools when they are loose?
