egg on cage bottom?

Postby crazy4birds on Thu Aug 21, 2008 5:10 am

My proven for previous senegal hen laid an egg on the cage bottom this a.m. I don't understand, since they have working the nest box for weeks. Anyone have a guess as to why she would not have used the nest box? Is there a way to keep her from doing this again? And should I put the egg in the box? (I did already & she went in, but didn't stay). THANKS!!

All I can say is to continue what you are doing! It's hard to say sometimes why they don't lay the eggs inside the box, but sometimes it helps to put the egg in the box... and they say that most hens usually don't start incubation until they have 2-3 eggs (or 3-4 for birds who lay larger clutches).
