Red flight feather

Postby Tonya on Wed Aug 20, 2008 2:44 pm

Hello Everyone!
It's been a long time since I have posted.
My 13 year old CAG, Echo, just finished molting and one of his flight feathers came in red. Does anyone know why this would happen?

Any chance Echo is a recovered plucker? Sometimes greys' feathers that were plucked repeatedly will grow back red. I've read that chicks whose first feathers have red in places that aren't normal have been associated with having PBFD, although not all have the disease. Enjoy Echo's pretty red feather, and take pictures of it now, because it probably won't be there very long.

I have had Echo since he was 3 and he has never picked a feather. My other CAG, Allie, is another story but hers aren't red, they just aren't there!!
I'll see if I can take a picture
Thank You

Has Echo been to an avian vet recently for a full blood panel and fecal??? Sometimes when feathers come in the wrong color, or just not normal, it could be an indication of internal problems or otherwise... especially a good idea to check the liver and kidneys.

Then again, it could just be an abnormally healthy feather, and nothing to worry about!
