Will chicken pellets make a cockatiel sick?

Postby jihae1200 on Fri Aug 01, 2008 11:32 pm

I have a number of chickens that I feed pellets along with there scratch feed. I was wondering if it would hurt my birds if I tried to see if they might eat them. Are they OK to feed to them? Or should I not try it? Anyone know if it could hurt them or not or is it like cockatiel peelets and ok to feed to them?

If they won't eat anything but seed, why would you want to teach them to like chicken pellets :?: :?: :?: I'm missing something  Cockatiels are very small and too often die of obesity from eating too much and the wrong things. Their pellets are carefully formulated to provide the nutrients they need. It seems logical that chickens' needs would be very different from cockatiels'. If you're wanting to feed your cockatiels chicken pellets because you have some and can't afford cockatiel pellets, call the suppliers and request free samples. MUCH better than feeding them chicken pellets I would think.

Have you tried sprouting their seed? It's much healthier that way and sprouting can be done overnight, so it's easy.

    Dietary requirements are different!

In the past all birds were feed diet requirements of poultry and now the advancements in pet bird's health has produced better results. In Europe these pet bird requirements have lead the US and for the last 100 yrs or so they have made better advancements they we have.

Granted poultry advancements have come a long way also, but their feed is geared to providing different requirements for different types of things they want to achieve. Larger breasts, heavier birds, sedentary activity, egg laying, and so forth. These achievements have no place with pet birds (parrots or otherwise) and should not be feed that regimen. Also some of the pellets for poultry contain hormones that have adverse effects on parrots.

I don't know if it would be safe to feed the pellets, but in the US, it is illegal to introduce any type of hormone into chicken feed. I suspect too, that it is largely ignored, or the hormones are injected into the food channel in a way that might not be detectable. Personally, I have eaten chicken prepared in several normal ways, and that night experience very bad, odd, or strange dreams. I attribute that to a hormone used in the chickens to make them develop faster, larger, and more fatty. At any rate, without knowing whether this chicken feed would contain any detrimental drugs or substances, I'd not feed it to your cockatiels.
