Full blown PANIC

Postby chibi-tori on Wed Jul 30, 2008 1:28 pm

This morning, I was sitting here reading the mail and had Gizmo on my shoulder, Shelly was sitting on the curtain rod, and Cappy was on the armrest of the chair. All of a sudden, they all just went berzerk, and I couldn't figure out why. About the same time, I walked out to the den, and every bird in the room and cage went absolutely wild, flying out of the room, around in circles and just going everywhere. I didn't know what happened or caused it, so I walked to the windows to close the curtains. Emi went in as well, and she hollered there IT is.... I was able to get 4 pictures of IT, and here it is... A big beautiful Hawk.. absolutely beautiful. After I got the pix, she flew to the roof of the bird room and landed briefly. I suspect they heard those 6' wings flapping or saw it out the windows. Whew!

    She is beautiful!!

Sam, just as a precaution, I'd make sure the outside aviary is secure. Hawks can rip netting and thin wire to shreds in moments.

Christie, that bird could bite through that aluminum screen just like we'd be able to punch thru a piece of paper. I am so thankful that the kids were not in there when the hawk landed.. that would be a total disaster, and she'd have had a lunch on my kids, and maybe come in the house for desert :( It was really the worst panic I've ever seen. Even Pixie and Smokey who never fly out of the cage took off in panic. Still, I'm glad to see that bird, as it sure can help keep the tree-rat population under control.

Aren't those survival instincts incredible? I'm sure ALL of your birds didn't see the IT but when even one bird sent out the warning they all knew to get out of Dodge! I had a little budgie that had a complicated routine to get into her cage: from the curtain rod, to the clothes pin holding her cage door open, to the ladder in front of the door, to the perch just inside her door, to the upper perch in the non-see-through roof of her cage. One day I had the TV on to a nature program and a bird of prey made an attack call and she flew straight to the upper perch as fast as I ever saw her fly, with no stops on the way. I didn't even know she could fly through her door. Once on her "safe" perch she peeked down, ever so cautiously. A little budgie who had never seen or heard a bird of prey in her life! A vet friend told me that baby birds will take cover if you pass the sillouette of bird of prey cut out of black construction paper over them but ignore cutout of other (non-preditor) birds. Amazing. Too bad more of us "human" hens don't have such good instincts when judging the men we fall for :?

Wow! I bet that was a scarey site for them! geez, look at him on your roof....he looks like he eats pretty good, not a skinny bird! Hawks don't usually come around houses and land on them like that, do they?? I think he may have heard your tiels and was looking around for them!

    Kim,

Actually, that particular hawk has visited numerous times, but that is the first time I've ever seen him light on the roof. Normally, he'll sit on the privacy fence or on a limb of the pine tree behind the house. He's one of at least 3 we have around here, and while I don't know what type hawk it is, I do know the other 2 are red-tailed and nowhere near the size of this guy. His wingspan is every bit of six feet, and perhaps larger. Now that he has discovered there are birds located in the house, I'm sorta cautious about letting them out into the flight. This morning, a bunch of them went out, some were in and out, but nobirdie seemed to be concerned or scared of the outside. By this time, the windows are already closed and the A/C is running. We're going to be extremely hot for the next several days, and I'll probably refrain from letting them out while it's so humid and hot.

Those long talons help when catching rabbits, squirrels, snakes and small rodents. That is how they hold onto the prey. Take it from someone who's held a hawk, they hurt!
