Combassou Finches?

Postby DLCarter on Wed Jul 16, 2008 1:40 pm

Recently at a bird mart I saw some finches that I thought were very striking. When I asked the gentleman what they were I had trouble understanding him but I though he said they were Combassou Finches. The 2 he had were both males and one was a solid iridescent blue and the other was that same blue but had brown feather flecked through it almost like a pied. I didn't buy them because I don't usually buy from marts and he didn't have any females. I was wondering if anybody could tell me more about these birds, send pictures, had any for sale, etc.. I would like to learn as much as possible about them before I think about buying any.

Thanks,
Lance Carter

Whydah - Senegal Combassou

It was a Senegal Combassou cock, a member of the parasitic Whydah family that was described as the male was BLACK and with his wings closed (just perching) there were 2 or 3 med brown feathers in his wings. He was the size of a small canary, with a tail a bout twice the length of a gouldian. "Black Finch" = bull puckey; they didn't have a clue, that's what happened.

The Combassou cock changes color seasonally from sparrow looking to solid black. The hen is a little smaller and identical in color in the off season. You cannot breed the Combassou without the Senegal Firefinch hosts, though in the wild, there are documented cases of the Combassou making a poor nest and raising their own young. The Combassou, like all Whydah, are fairly aggressive, though surprisingly, not so toward their tiny Firefinch hosts.

It seems they run $55.00 to $75.00 a pair online. I couldn't find much about them!!

You may want to see if someone in the National Finch and Softbill Society knows anything about them if you are wanting some. They classify more as a softbill from what I can see.
