Try using a large feather duster and slowly use it herd him into the cage door opening.

Remember he is one the smartest birds out there and if in doubt always use his mind to challange him. When rehoming an adult Macaw watch for his little messages that in time will be easy for you to "read" how he is feeling, to aid you. Spend a few weeks just watching and remembering these manorisms because it will help in determining what's going on in his mind and how you can approach and interact with him. He's new in your house so both of you will be trying to understand "what happens next" in this enviroment. Give him plenty of time to adjust to this new setting.

Purple Heart gave you some good advice. One of my African Greys used to get naughty if he got on top of his cage, which is 6' tall. He was going through his terrible twos and shouldn't have been up there in the first place. My boyfriend was taking care of the birds and would just let him come out. If he put my Grey's favorite treat in his food bowl, my Grey would quickly go back inside his cage for the treat. I like to buy the mixed nuts in the grocery stores at Christmas time. You can buy in bulk and keep them in the freezer.

I don't let my birds play on top of their cages, although they will all step up nicely for me from there. I've heard of others who have problems getting their bird down. Either the bird is aggressive or it becomes a game to them because you can't catch them.
