For mini macaw owners with cockatiels...

Postby JKnox0526 on Thu Jun 12, 2008 8:21 am

So we all know that cockatoos give off dust which macaw's are sensitive to. FYI a cockatiel can give off enough dust to be a problem for a mini macaw. We had to put our babies accross the living room from each other and they now sleep in different rooms. We also have to wipe down everything/sweep/mop all the time. Jewel was sneezing wet sneezes, it's stopped now seperating them and cleaning more. I just wanted to share since we had never thought about this being a problem. Our vet said this should help but because Jewel is only slightly bigger then Jet he said having them is like having a large macaw and a large cockatoo together.

When keeping macaws and dusty birds together, it's usually recommended to keep them in separate rooms, with separate air systems... although, it's good you are able to keep them in the same room but far apart! I only hope you don't have to go to further drastic means to keep both healthy and happy!

Cockatiels and greys can be problems for any sized macaw, if that macaw is allergic to the dust. Cockatiels are also part of the cockatoo family... being sure to give the dusty birds daily bathes, extra vitamin A (said to help keep down dust, but you don't want to overdose a bird, either), and maybe even an air cleaner (NOT ionizer) near the dusty birds should help... as well as spritzing the cage papers before cleaning.

I can see where cockatiel dust could cause problems for a macaw. After all, a cockatiel is basically a mini cockatoo. Most people do not have separate air systems in their homes. I remember one person on the board who did okay with their macaw and cockatoo, but they had a large room and at least one air purifier. When it comes time to replace my furnace, I want to get one with a air purifier and humidifier in it. I checked them out, and it's not that much more to add these features.

We have two hahns macaws and one can not be in the same room as our cockatiel. When we tried to have them in the same room one of the hahns became congested. When we moved the cockatiel into another room, she became uncongested.

That's all it took for us too was seperating them. We have a small house but half of it is a dining room/ living room/ kitchen all in one, so we can seperate them, but they can still be in the center of our home. We also have an air filter on our air conditioner in take that is supposed to take out dust and help with allergies. We have to change it ever other month, but it's not much money and it helps a lot.
