To tame a budgie

Postby luvthembirds on Thu Jul 03, 2008 1:13 pm

Hey guys!
I'm not new to birds but kinda to budgies. So I just had to rehome my baby wb caique I had gotten over two weeks ago do to my dog not liking her and spacing concerns and other factors with keeping a parrot of her size. If I had room for her big cage I might have kept her, but there were a few concerns. But I do have room for budgies, so here are my questions. Would it be better to get two to keep each other company cause some nights I would be home later around 7 or 8 and how would I go about taming one down? It may be awhile before I end up getting one maybe 5 months or so, but i want to start thinking now and see what you guys say. I really love birds and feel maybe the wb caique(she was perfect) is not right for this time in my life. Maybe I should have started with something smaller and in need of less space than a larger than life caique. thanks guys--lauren

Oh and would two males maybe get along cause I really don't want to worry about getting fertile eggs.

Male budgies make wonderful pets. 2 males can make great cage mates PLUS as you stated you don't have to worry about a hen and the problems with eggs etc.

What are your thoughts about the dog liking a budgie or two? From my experience, the smaller the bird, the more dogs yearn to eat them. The smaller the cage, the easier it is for a dog to knock it over, freeing the bird to its death. Please give this a lot more thought, Lauren. I know you're disappointed, but I also know you don't want a tragedy happening on your watch.

The difference is that I can put them in my room where my dog doesn't go/insn't allowed because of my bunnies. However, she does sleep in my bed but she does not bother the bunnies.

I'm afraid I would not recommend a bird in your situation, Lauren. Sadly, dogs don't live very long. I hope you'll find the patience to continue your love of birds from afar, maybe through volunteering, while you're still living in limited space with a dog in your bed.

Sorry :(

Bluesbirds,
I totally understand and can't thank you enough for your answer. I begin working in a wonderful bird store tomorrow and plan to continue on with the love of birds  We hope to get a dog trainer for her, cause she has some other problems as well. As that is said, go figure but we are considering to get another dog:) It won't replace a bird, but this is something the whole family wants, and I need a dog I can run with, not one who poops out on a mile:) But if we do bring a bird into the household again, it will be next year if we move cause we are really considering this because of our noisy neighbors(should have gotten a large macaw, that wouldhave taught 'em lol) and birdie would have its own space and the dog would be trained, cause its not just her breed, she's just a jealous dog and needs to learn she can't pull on her lease and can't run the family. Thanks again!!!
