Putting pair together for the 1st time

Postby highdesertdiva on Wed Jul 02, 2008 12:50 pm

I have a female Indian Ringneck, and got her a male companion recently. She is not hand tamed, and neither is he. They are both mature birds. he has had a mate in the past, but she died. My female laid eggs a couple of months back, before I got the male. I let her sit on them until she abandoned them on her own. Don`t care if they breed, just don`t like to keep single birds. So, I have had their cages right up against each other, with their favorite roosting perches only seperated by wire. I have had them in this setup for a few weeks. So, today I put them both together in a 4 x 2 foot cage. She is being a crabby witch. They are either at opposite end of the cage, or , if he gets too close, she chases him off. She has got a hold of him by his tail and wing feathers, but has`nt drawn blood as of yet. I do feel sorry for the male, because he is being harassed.
My question is....how long should I allow this to go on? I realize that pairs being set up for the first time, often squabble for a while. When can I be certain that this union is a no go? Thanks.

I would keep a close eye on them. Rearrange the cage if needed to mix things up and take her "territory" away. I would remove them to their seperate cages when you are not able to supervise until you are sure they are getting along and putting them back in the bigger cage together when you can watch. I got my IRN on a rehome because she killed another IRN that she didn't like. Needless to say, she will always be a solitary IRN because I don't ever want to risk her doing that again.

Clip the females wing a bit so she is not as able to keep up and the male can easily escape.

Well, its been a month and a half. The female is still witchy to the male if he gets close to her. There just does`nt seem to be a love connection of any kind going on here. And I`m sure that male is tired of walking on eggshells. Big dissapointment, as I did`nt want these birds to be in seperate cages and living a solitary life. Rats anyways....
