Split means that they carry the genes for a different color mutation, but don't show it. I have a male whiteface tiel that is split to lutino. He carries the gene for lutino, but doesn't show it. When I did let him breed, his one chick was a lutino. I know the gene came from him because the female is a normal grey.

    Two pearls and a whiteface pearl. The whiteface pearl looks like it could also be cinnamon but was not born with red eyes....

    This means that either the male is split pearl or is a pearl himself. Thus far, it seems he is a pearl, unless the two produce more offspring, some of which would not be pearls....

    Mother:Cinnamon Pearl Split To Whiteface
    Father:Whiteface Pearl

    male offspring:
    50% Whiteface Pearl Split To {X2: Cinnamon}
    50% Pearl Split To Whiteface {X2: Cinnamon}

    female offspring:
    50% Whiteface Pearl
    50% Pearl Split To Whiteface

    VS

    Mother:Cinnamon Pearl Split To Whiteface
    Father:Whiteface Split To {X2: Pearl}

    male offspring:
    25% Whiteface Split To {X2: Cinnamon Pearl}
    25% Whiteface Pearl Split To {X2: Cinnamon}
    25% Grey Split To Whiteface {X2: Cinnamon Pearl}
    25% Pearl Split To Whiteface {X2: Cinnamon}

    female offspring:
    25% Whiteface
    25% Whiteface Pearl
    25% Grey Split To Whiteface
    25% Pearl Split To Whiteface

    Hey that whiteface pearl looks as if it could be Cinnamon Whiteface pearl!!! The color can be a subtle difference but if it is you should get the tan of Mom and white. Beautifull!!! That would also mean your male is split to cinnamon as well. Any updated pics?

    I haven't any problems with the parents abusing the babies until they were about 2-3 weeks old and were starting to grow feathers. They picked on the lutinos but not the normal greys.
    I wouldn't tape the hole of the box shut. It might panic the parents. I would put the box in an aquarium (with a towel at the bottom of aquarium as a cushion), cover the aquarium with a screen when you transport the birds on your move. leave food bowls outside box and in aquarium so parents can move freely. Maybe other chatters have other ideas (??)

    the babies are almost 5 weeks old...we made the move when they were just 6 days old...and no problems from the parents, they are doing great with the babies. yesterday one of the babies ended up out of the box and in the main cage picking at the seeds. the parents are wanting to lay again. how do i prevent that when the babies arent weaned yet? the parents are still feeding the current clutch fine but i dont want them to have anymore babies, especially this soon. at 14 weeks of age they can go to new homes, is that right?

    they get so much loving on that they are spoiled rotten , now that they are older one of my kids always has them. we do have one that doesnt like to be touched very much but once its out it calms down and is fine.

    What perfect babies!
    I got "Button" when she was 6 weeks old. She was HUGE but she was still making baby noises. I have to be honest , I had no experience at that time about babies nor did I know what that sound was that she was making. When I talked to the breeder she said it was "normal".
    When I look back to that time 6 years ago she was much too young. :( I wonder if that is why today she has "issues" and that she is a bit mentally /socially retarded.She should have stayed with the parents and/or still hand-fed til she was at least 8 weeks old.
    When Lucile & Linus had chicks, I hand-fed them until they were COMPLETELY weaned at 10 weeks old!
