resist the urge.....

Postby bostonbudgie on Fri Jun 20, 2008 8:47 am

I have a hard time going in pet shops and seeing cockatiels. I really have to fight the urge not to take at least one home with me. I have 10 birds alltogether (5 tiels, 4 budgies and one princess of wales) especially when they demand individual attention and of course, all the vet visits.
I saw this cute little pied tiel and had to resist the urge to take her home remembering how Fresh Baby was acting up because she really needed one-on-one attention. It becomes an addiction!
Do any of you suffer from this tiel addiction? :D

Hi,
I have that problem as well. Especially if I see them in conditions that aren't great. I visited a breeder recently with the intention of coming home with one baby that still needed to be hand fed. She had 40 birds in a small aviary. One very small OPEN nest box in the aviary with two babies in it. She had one bird she was trying to sell for $10 because other birds that wanted to use the box had pecked at it 'till it lost an eye. Now it has no depth perception and injures itself trying to fly around. She was feeding them crackers. Needless to say I left with as many birds as I could afford to free from that place. I'm sorry to say that was only 4. It's been less than a week and they still won't touch my little salads or the 9 bean, rice and pasta combo but at least they eat millet. I keep trying daily with the good stuff and I noticed they are finally eating the seed pellet mixture I put in. I still have them in quarantine but I visit them often ,speak softly and carry a big treat!

I visit a the same pet store 2-4 times a week  I go to the birds to love and cuddle as many as I can!! Most of the time it's the macaws, since they are there so long to get weened they are very sociable and affectionate with people they see often.

i can definately relate to you...i started out with 2 tiels and i now have 12...i have to admit most of mine were rescues that i took from all types of situations...for the exception of the three babies that my birds hatched...they do require so much individual attention and alot of work keeping their area clean and healthy, not to mention the vet visits, which can get quite costly..when i go into pet stores, there are times i just fall in love with the birds there but the reality of the labor of love that i already have kicks in. And of course my hubby saying what are we going to do with another bird...lol...
CoCo, Ell, Petey,Love Sponge,DR. Evil, and Trigger
newest tiels~ Callie & Keiko

I try not to look at craigslist and I bring my husband with me to pet shops so he can talk me out of bringing another one home.
I will admit it can be exhausting making sure cages are clean and cooking special foods for the little brats.
I have to make sure the "quiet ones" do not get overlooked for attention. It's a full time job! ha !
