Marlie and her constant squawking

Postby flemishe on Sun Jun 22, 2008 11:15 am

The past two days, Marlie has been non stop screaming/squawking, even when she is with me on my shoulder she continues this and is not calm like she normally is. I know she has done this before, and it stops eventually and she returns to her normal self. Any thoughts on what causes this behavior?

I wish I knew why too. With me it's usually Woody who gets going first, then the rest of the birds join in! Mostly I notice these noisey times happen when I leave the room or are out of the room, but sometimes even when I am there they are noisey. I was thinking most of the time bright sunny days this seems to happen more often on, but there have been some gloomy days when they get noisey like this too. My female Boss usually stays pretty quiet, but will join in with Woody most times, then my lovie Pip just thinks this great.....the more noise, the merrier! and he joins in on the squawking and yelling........they get Ivy all wound up and she starts yelling sometimes too......the good news though, this doesn't happen often and when it does, it usually doesn't last a long time.

It's almost as if she can't seem to get settled, or something is wrong. Normally she is so content, but the constant yelling drives me batty.

Eddie and Linus will do this as well . From my observations it come from two reasons:
a) not enough sleep (too much day light)
b) hormones

From my experience, a lack of sleep will make some of the kids be rather noisy while others show being sleepy. On the other hand, I have a few who are just going to make noise regardless. Chirp, aptly named is one of the screamers. I know from observation, he dislikes Cappy & Shelly, and will fly around screaming at the top of his lungs, chasing and trying to run them off. He's very territorial as well. I believe this is due to the fact that both Shelly and Cappy are "outsiders" and don't belong amongst the flock. In some way, the flock is pretty tight knit, with parents and brothers and sisters being the majority. For the most part, I notice the noise associated with a full moon, or at least with a waxing moon within a week of full. For a few days after the full moon they will continue with wilder behavior, but usually a week later, they resume their normal moods. Another thing I've discovered is if I don't speak to them when I come in from outside or even from another room, they will start fussing. I suppose they expect me to speak to them! Most times I do, but there have been instances when I didn't and they'll fuss till I pay attention to them. Hormones also play a big part in their moodiness, and fortunately, I think most of mine have gotten over the spring hormonal rush. At least there is little mating occurring, and everybirdie is rather calm. They have made a point of napping now most time late morning and continuing into the early afternoon.
