Budgie's poop looks weird!

Postby moomc on Wed Jun 11, 2008 8:33 pm

I have two 9-10 yr. old Budgies that have always been in great health so far. The last couple of days the poop in the cage has taken on a pale greenish, chalky color. Still firm---not runny. There is also normal looking poop too so I'm not sure which bird it is.There hasn't been a change in their diet so I don't think that's the cause. They both seem to be fine otherwise.
Any ideas what might be causing it? Should I take them to the vet?

Usually droppings that take on a greenish color (even clear liquid) is a sign of liver disease/failure, and is usually due to an improper diet, or things within the diet that the birds body cannot process correctly (such as dyes and preservatives). What do the budgies eat???

I would suggest separating the two budgies, see who has the irregular droppings, then taking him to an avian vet to get a blood panel done. If it is liver, the vet can prescribe meds (usually something along the lines of herbal remedies - flax seed oil/milk thistle extract/dandelion extract - or some other meds)

    Monica,
    Thanks for your reply.
Their diet consists of a little seed, greens & other veggies, occasional oat groats & "daily diet" pellets.
I think I've figured out which one is having the problem. They aren't spring chickens anymore so maybe I should make a change in their diet because of their age.
I'll give the vet a call and see what she thinks.

    Thanks!!

Yes, dark green with white around it. This is an over all pale-ish chalky green.

When Boo's poops were suddenly a lime green colour and he was listless, it turned out he had psittacosis. Apparently lead poisoning also turns their poops lime green. Yours sound like a different green, but I'd get it checked out asap as budgies can go downhill fast.
