Med. Sulphur Cockatoo loudness?

Postby queenofhandbag on Tue Jun 10, 2008 5:29 pm

Just wondering how loud can Med. Sulphur cockatoos be? I have a b/g macaw at home, she is pretty quiet. I live in a townhouse, and I don't have any problem with her at all. I am thinking about either a pair of Med. sulphur cockatoo or a pair of greenwing macaws, any suggestion?

Thanks!

I have a Lesser Sulpur and an Umbrella and they our by far the LOUDEST parrots I have! I also own a B&G, Severe Macaw, Congo & Timneh Grey, I live in a house on a acre of land and even when I walk down the driveway 190' to get the mail, I can hear the Toos when they get on a roll :)

Your B&G may be quiet now, but if you add another bird, or in this case either pair known for being loud, expect the noise to increase exponentially. I have a Rose Breasted Cockatoo, which I've heard some people call a **quieter** cockatoo. I live in a house, and my next door neighbor once told me that occasionally they will hear him in their house when he sounds off. I was horrified, but luckily for me, they weren't upset, and my other neighbors are older and must not have the best hearing since they always say they never hear anything. If I am outside doing yard work or in the garage (unattached), I can easily hear him. If you live in a townhouse, I would advise you to do some serious thinking.

I have Leigha, a 9 year old Eleanora (MSC), and he can be heard about 300 feet from the house. I definitely would not recommend him, or pretty much any cockatoo for apartment living...unless they have very sound proof walls. I placed a very quiet little goffins a few years ago. She was returned to me within the week, the neighbors complained that they could hear her. She was on an end room. She wasn't loud, but could do a constant squeek to get attention. As was also mentioned, you macaw might be quiet now, but they are flock animals, and if you add more birds, they like to chat with each other. I really hate to be a damper. It's great that you have taken the time to inquire.

I have pairs of both and I would not recomend any large macaw or cockatoo pair or single bird for a townhouse you may have a noise problem. You may have one that is quiet but that can change overnight by adding one just one more bird
