Our very strange macaw...

About a month ago Jewel started sneezing (so we thought) ALL the time. We called our vet and he recommended we seperate Jewel and Jet because he was concerned that Jet's dander may have been bothering Jewel. So we put their day time cages across the room from one another and put their sleep cages in two seperate rooms. Within a day her big sneezes that she was having about once a day stopped, however she kept sounding like she was sniffling. We have an awesome vet who calls us daily while a birdie is sick or hurt to check on them and offer advice, since it lasted through the weekend he was getting really concerned and wanted us to come in Monday morning first thing (we had called the Thursday before). Sunday night Jerry was cuddling Jewel and kissing her head, Jewel started doing her sniffling thing and I suddenly realized it almost sounded exactly like the kisses he was giving her! THE DUMB BIRD WAS SNIFFLING ON PURPOSE TO MAKE KISSING NOISES! I told Jerry and he started playing peek-a-boo with her and she stopped for that and then started making the noise again when he kissed her. I called the vet Monday and he had a good laugh about it.

Birdies are weird... who would think blowing air through your noise would sound like a kiss except a silly little bird!

That is funny. I had the bad flu this winter. I was sneezing and coughing off and on for almost 2 mon. Now my B&G starts sneezing and coughing in the morning when Im making coffee . I tell her to knock it off and she will start laughing. Also my senegal will do a very bad cough now. Have fun . Mark
Always love you bird as you love yourself or more.

A few years ago, one of my Greys was making terrible coughing noises. It sounded like she was coughing up a lung. I was concerned and was going to call a vet, but I got out The African Grey Handbook to read first. It said that Greys do not cough, although they do a very good imitation after someone in the household has been ill. Sure enough, I'd had bronchitis recently and had been coughing quite a bit. Occasionally, I will still hear her do her cough. The bird room is on the main floor at the front of the house, and my bathroom is on the second floor at the back of the house. Sometimes as I get ready for work in the morning, I've heard her cough. It surprised me how loud she does it, especially considering the soft sweet voice she uses when she talks.

I just never thought sneezing sounds could sound like kisses, but appearently they do... Jewel does 3 or 4 different kissing noises, nasal breathing ("sneezing") is one...

They also make a hissing sound, this is just what it is intended for, to alert her companions, and sound mean. When you first hear it, it sounds like a snort, or a sneeze. She might just be playing with you and offering this sound "playfully." Later on especially if she breeds and communicates with her mate, this sound will alert him to back off.

Remember in the bird world, they do not like moderate or low sounds, and prefer to have louder sounds. When a bird does this they are trying to relay some sort of information.

Nah, it's not that... it sounds like short little kisses, she just uses her nose

I have a Quaker who will "bless you" whenever you cough or sneeze. There are also some flock members who will "sneeze" cough and make other attention getting noises. Aren't they cute!?!?
