Finch Eggs

Postby lfe on Fri May 30, 2008 8:58 am

My female finch has laid 18 eggs within a period of 2-3 weeks! :o She doesn't seem to stay on them very often as she did at first, neither does the mail.
How long does it take for the eggs to hatch?
She also laid 9 eggs about a month ago but none were fertile. I'm wondering to if maybe the pair is too young as no babies are hatching!? Can anyone help me with this?
Thank you so much.
Laurel

I suspect that you have 2 hens, or maybe 3?

    Thank you for your reply.
However, I have raised Finch's in the past and I do know how to tell a male from a female; but I have never run into this kind of situation. Very puzzling! :)

    What type finches are these......Zebras?

If this is truly one hen laying all these eggs, you need to take the nest away. She's not in peak physical condition to raise chicks and
continual laying is depleting her body of calcium, which will also cause her to become eggbound. I think it's time to give them a break.

Thank you, I will take the nest away and wait a few months before I put it in again.

I very much appreciate your reply.
