Earthquake in Illinois

Postby cuddletubes on Wed Apr 23, 2008 5:31 am

Just wondering if anyones birds reacted to the earthquake last week? I am an early bird (no pun intented) going through the mail and having my coffee around 4:15 am. My flock is still sound asleep. At about 4:25 am my Timneh (Sweety) starts flapping around in her cage after a minuet or so I decided I should lift the cover and check on her, she was horrified! I took her out and for about the next 20 minuets she just shook and was breathing hard while staring at her cage. Even though Sweety is my Husbands bird I stayed up with her. I could not get her to go back in her cage for anything! It wasn't till about 7:30 am that she let me put her back in. Later that day I was watching the news and to my surprise Illinois had a 5.2 earthquake at 4:30 am. I felt nothing, and none of my other birds (or dog for that matter) reacted to it. But our little Sweety did! And I thought it was night fright!

Many birds in the region reacted, from what I have read on other forums. I have seen no mention yet of any response to the many aftershocks. :?: :?: :?: Some were quite strong according to my news sources. Good for you for being there for Sweety when she was so scared.

Wow, you ARE an early bird!!

Luckily, I was out of range. Someone in MN, near the SD border, is claiming that the earthquake caused their foundation to crack. Since no one else in the area had any similar problems, I think it's a ploy to get their foundation fixed by their insurance company. (They said on the news story that they planned to contact their insurance agent.)

Once in a blue moon, my Grey will get spooked during the night. Even though I sleep pretty soundly, it wakes me up. I take him out to calm him, and it usually take a while before he will want to go back in his cage.

Out of curiosity... You said the TAG was your husband's bird. Is Sweety usually friendly with you also? I'm sure she felt like you were rescuing her. Sometimes instances like this (you rescuing her) help the relationship between the non-favorite person and the bird. I'm just wondering if you've noticed this to be the case. I know I went off tangent, but your post got me to thinking.

I am in the Minneapolis area. I have a new pionus that has been sleeping in my bedroom and he woke me up because he fell off his perch and then was thrashing a little in his cage. I just talked softly to him a little bit and he was ok. Then when I went online that morning I rad about the quake and wondered if he could have felt or sensed it or if it was just a coincedence. The other birds did make slight noise but settled back in after a few minutes. Makes ya wonder.

DEFINATELY. I am in NW Ohio. The birds had a night fright in the early morning. One is prone to night frights, and my calm tiel was in a separate cage... I thought it was wierd when he freaked too--being in a separate cage and all. I litterally flew out of my bedroom to make sure they were okay. My less tame birds had no interest in being comforted, but my Baby Bubba (tame 11 year old) wanted to be held and was quite displeased. It made no sense til I turned on the news and found out there had been an earthquake--and it could be felt all the way in Ohio--some people said even in Cleveland (NE Ohio).

Well I live about 30 miles from the quakes epicenter & my B & G freaked out. The Green Wing wasn't real happy about it either. They also tended to be a little nervous the night before but I don't know that you can chalk that up to anything. The poor little B & G hung onto the cage (not a perch) with three points & wouldn't let go till I got her out & held her. However when I went to work she was still clinging on for dear life. They are both fine now.
