Yellow Turq

Postby Claudia on Wed Nov 14, 2007 10:49 pm

hi guys

have just got myself a young (3 months) Yellow Turq who had to be rescued out of an aviary from his very aggressive dad :?
The lady breeder reckons it's a he due to dad's behaviour.......

He is a very placid little bird.

I was wondering if anyone knows if these guys can be made tame and whether I should clip his wings once to make the taming easier (I did that with my tiel and he is now fully flighted but tame though not exactly friendly :( )

Also, I'm thinking of trying this little fellow with my tiel eventually, has anyone ever tried that?
Have a large "indoor aviary" style cage.
If if doesn't work out I thought of getting an outdoor aviary and putting the Turq in there with perhaps some finches and/or Bourkes.........

Any tips are welcome and appreciated!

Thanks

I have never heard of clipping the wings of grass parakeets, because their legs are not as strong as other parakeets, and they do not engage in as much climbing. It the baby is young you might be able to finger-tame him, you might try clipping, but you need to be sure that he will be able to get to feed and water and a perch. I did have a bourkes that I hand-fed, which was unclipped and finger-tame.

Thanks for that.
Yeah I have noticed he does indeed not climb much.
I'm considering starting up a little aviary but, as I do not want to breed, I would like to stick with one bird per breed.
I do not want overcrowd either and was therefore thinking of a (Rosa) Bourke with this little fellow.
I have heard they do not "interbreed" but what if they are both male, would they fight?

I don't know if it'll work having the Turq in with the tiel as the tiel is not the most social bird :? and male as well but then again you never know....

Hey there,
I was just reading through some of the posts here in the grass keet area and noticed yours, i found it interesting. I am a breeder of grass keets and have raised many turks. I have handfed them and let them be parent raised. It is my unfortunate duty to let you know that they are what they are ( an aviary bird ) Meaning: no matter how they were raised they dont stay as friendly as you would have hoped. They tame down a little but they are ment to be watched and admired. As a breeder i thought i would just let you know. And clipping the wings is a little rough on them they are a more fragile than the standard budgie ( parakeet ). Enjoy your bird they are great.

sorry for not responding any earlier

Riley the Turk has since got a girlfriend, Bella :D
They are both the Yellow Turks with the orange chests (I know they get called red breasted/chested but I am sorry it really is orange! )
They are doing well together and I can't wait to breed them next spring, yep have completely changed my mind :D
I now got myself a double cage aviary with them in one cage and my tiel Noah with two female finches and his new girlfriend since today !, Meg, a stunning Whiteface pearl (hence the name Meg, means pearl in Celtic/Gaelic apparently :D ).
Got a lovely little brown quail as well, Quincy, yes they've all got names, you've got to when you have kids
The finches are Tawny (a brown one) and Snowflake (yep you guessed it, she's white :D )
Here is a pic of the aviary:

thats an awesome spacious setup. the birds think they're in paradise, i bet!

That's a beautiful aviary Claudia! I'm jealous LOL! If you don't mind me asking, where'd you order it from? Or did you just build it yourself?

I actually got it secondhand, it is in great condition!
It's a double cage aviary with safety passage, exactly what I wanted.
It came with 13 painted firetail finches which we sold for $10 each so the aviary ended up being a bargain at $400 minus the $130 for the finces!
(AUD270 is roughly USD245) Cool deal hey! :D
