Macaw Cage?

Postby AllMyBirds on Sat Dec 20, 2008 12:32 am

Good evening ~ I was wondering if someone could give me the location of a Bird Pet Store that might have macaw cages in stock. We live in Chino Hills (general Los Angeles area), and I have had no luck searching in the phone book. Joseph (28 year old Green Wing Macaw) has asked Santa for a new cage, and I'm running out of ideas. I hesitate to order over the Internet, as I would actually like to see the cage, and give it a really good shake, just as I am sure Joseph will do! Don't need a large one - 24" x 24" x 36" tall - as he only will use it for sleeping at night. Any help you have to offer will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The only help I could give you is: 24" x 24" x 36" tall IS TOO SMALL! For a GREENWING, even a mini would be stretching it quite a bit.

Cages are built to replace ever 5 years or so, unless you get a Kings 506 or similar, which is built for the life of your Macaw. I will include a link below, fair price, delivered to your door. Mine have the shaken the heck out these and find them to be quite adequate. And for 300.00 bucks total including shipping I think you will too!

Ok this one I can't resist. Your in LA & can't find a cage dealer? I googled: cage, parrot, los Angeles, Ca. & on the first page I got Parrot Express in Tarzana & Bird Cage Portal in Fallbrook. Now I know those aren't close. How do I know that from Indiana you say. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley & have a cousin that lives in Chino Hills to this day. Try googling the same thing only San Gabriel Valley, isn't that where Chino Hills is?

Also as far as I'm concern the best cage I have is a Cal Cage. Now they are out of business but their web site is still up & they may have some cages left. It may be worth a call. I believe they are down near San Diego. I'd buy another one of those in a heart beat for my B & G if I could find one big enough.

Also I agree don't purchase a cage that small. Purchase one the bird can live in. Yes right now things are the way they are but remember that a bird especially a macaw will live 60 years & ur situation will probably change.

Anyway good luck & call Cal cage.

A good place to get pet supplies is Omar's Exotic Birds, I think they may have a store in the Chino Hills area.

You may not still be looking for a reply, but I solved the cost/size problem by getting a 5'x4'x4' dog crate. It gives enough height for my Ruby macaw (greenwing/scarlet cross--greenwing size) to climb, and a lot of horizontal space for hanging toys. He's been in it for 12 years. Much cheaper with the only drawback being that you have to open the cage to get at the dishes.

Chasca, I'm glad that a dog cage has worked so well for your Ruby macaw! However, one needs to take in the safety of buying cages meant for other species. Is it painted? Does the paint chip? Is the wire bare? If bare, is it coated in zinc? Does it have large amounts of lead? What may be safe for a dog, cat, or other animal does not necessarily make it safe for a bird. However, I do know of a few people who have taken dog runs/outside kennels and making them into bird aviaries!
