New B & G !

Postby Christyb on Sat Nov 01, 2008 5:45 pm

Hello,
I'm soo excited, went to meet Lilly this afternoon at a home, she is 2 1/2 yrs and ofcourse magnificent!! Have never had a bird that big, thought I was going to be afraid of her, but she is so sweet, took to me right away, got to spend 2 hrs with her in her home. Purchased her! Going again in a couple days for another visit, then we can bring her home. Lilly is used to climbing on a wrought iron spiral staircase, well, not one in my house! lol Would like some ideas of what Hubby and I can come up with that provide the climbing, hanging upside down she likes to do. Trees? Rope hanging from the ceiling? Thanks for any suggestions !

Hi My name is Mark. My B&G Josie has her own room . Its only 8x12. Ive hung 1" cotton ropes From the ceiling. I put in hooks in the ceiling and looped the ropes so they would hang down 2". Hooks 3 to 4 feet apart . Allso knoted ropes hanging down to a tree stand. I also built a hulahoop hanging play gym. You can go to a post I did." I dont know what its called". The people that replyed gave me sites to go to to see it .Its on this macaw site to. I also put a wire cage over the widow on the outside. Its 3x3x3 . Im going to make it bigger. 6" long. Josie was out in the rain today playing. It was so funny to watch. Ive also seen where people have hung cargo nets. I hang toys fron the ropes and bells. I also have a TV in her room. She likes cartoons.and sesme street. She spends alot of time climbing on her rope. I change the ropes every year. Because they get soiled. Josie goees through alot of wooden toys.It helps fight bordem and trims her beak . Josies wings are clipped an we go for alot of walks and car rides. I hope this helps. I will be around if you want to talk or need help.

    Hi Mark,
Wow, thank you for the ideas!! Sounds like Josie has it made ;-) We get to go visit with Lily later this afternoon, hopefully will be bringing her home Friday. How old is Josie? Do you have other birds? I have 2 very spoiled cockatiels, canary and 2 parakeets. Her wings are clipped and we do plan on taking her with us in the car and outside when we can.

Hi Christy Josie is 3 1/2 yr.old. She is very special. I brought her home at three days old. Ive been a rescue bird person for may years. As we raised her ,she was so special and fun, we got down to One bird. If I get sick ,she is my nurse. She loves Halloween. I dress up as a pirate and she is on my shoulder. She gets so excited. Squeals and laughs, says hello how are you.She likes all the neighbors kids coming by.B&Gs are a fun loving bird. When we play Josie is on her back about half the time kicking and laughing. Good luck with Lily. Mark

Wow Mark, how special to get her so young!! We brought Lily home last night, just couldn't wait. She has made us laugh quite a bit. Her previous owner says she is a beaky bird and not much of a biter. Last night I got a couple bites and pinches from her but I'm guessing cause she is just stressing, understandably!

Hi Christy B&Gs are all very special. Josie has learn the uses of words. If she wants water ,she will tell me "want water" . Today she took it further. It started raining very hard and she had been out playing in her window cage. When I came in her room to close the window she said "want water stop". She is a very good talker and learns new words all the time. It may take a while for Lilly to setle in the new home. so dont rush her. Just take it slow and easy.Ive taken in rescued bird over the years and it is so interesting to see the birds personality come out in time. When they come into a new envirament. Keep me posted Mark

    Hi Mark,
Only got bite twice tonight, progress? lol Have trouble getting her back into her cage, think tomorrow, won't even take her out, just let her watch things. We have her in the living room, talk with her, give her things. What kind of foods does Josie like? She sounds amazing and incredibly smart! I also have 2 cockatiels, they both were on my shoulder when I fed the fish tonight, the one says , as I'm dropping the flakes in, "wanna a bite?" too cute!

Hi Christy Thats so cute. In the wild Macaws eat a high fat diet. Alot of nuts . Josie gets seeds and nuts vegies ,fruit & pellets. The vegies are corn, broc. ,green beans, sprouts, apples ,grapes, oranges ,pears, raspberries ,blue berries. Grapes and oranges corn green bean she likes best with walnut ,peanut almonds in or out of the shell. I change it all the time to help her to not get board and it always depends on whats in season. She also love pasta with sause and a little cheese.peanut butter and nacho chips. Josie also loves cooked food . and meats as chicken and their leg bones. She will crack them and eat the marel out of them. some fish and beef all well cooked. If Im eating something she will want to try it.Today I gave her slice of Orange cut up a slice of apple cut up 6 grapes a corn wheel and a 1/3 c of seeds nuts pellets with six peanuts in the shell. this after noon I gave her 4 walnut halfs as a treat. I give then to her when she is being a good bird and I tell her that . Like , You are such a good bird ,here you go sweetie In a loving voise. I just wanted to tell this. If Josie gets to ruff and nippy when she is playing with me .I thump her beak and tell her NO be sweet or be easy. Also sometimes when a bird nips it is a way to tell you leave me alone. Talk to you later Mark
