Proventricular dilatation syndrome (Important!)

Postby rpavlis2 on Sat Sep 06, 2008 3:19 pm

I posted some important news about proventricular dilatation syndrome in the grey chat area.

This disease can attack many types of parrots, but macaws and African Greys seem most prone to it.

The news--it is described more fully in my post in the grey section--is that the causative agent has almost certainly been identified.

This will likely mean a test to determine which birds are infected, and it might (hopefully) lead to a vaccine (or even a cure.)

Robert,

Why would you post about PDD in the grey section?

PDD or commonly referred to as Macaw Wasting Disease has been around for some time now. More testing and diagnosis has been accomplished since 1995 as compared to many other diseases that our parrots have been exposed to. Probably on account of the fact that strains (or spin offs of this) can effect humans and other animals.

Although less prominent than other diseases it does have the tendency to create a reaction to most of us who care for Macaws and other birds. Are you warning us about something or did you just find out about this and are excited to share?
