Severe and a Pionus?

Postby speaktomi on Fri Jun 13, 2008 1:41 pm

Hi everyone, does anyone know if it's wise to cohabitate a MaxiPi and a Severe? Is it possible they'll attach to each other (both are confirmed females) and we can co-cage them at SOME point? Our space is limited right now....

Little background on the birds--the maxi's only been caged with others (her clutchmates) until she was brought home and she's not quite 2yrs old yet. Now she lives with 3 cats and a large dog. The Severe is 4yrs old and had been kept with a male for a while, they tried to breed her but I guess it didn't take, she stressed out, started to pluck her chest (it's growing back now), and now she's alone (bored), and in need of a new home where she can get the attention here current Mommy doesn't have time to give her // her 3 kids and the dog. Bird is apparently bilingual, very talkative, and playful.
Mama of Jasmine (MaxiPi), Karenya (doggy), JJ (kitty), Amber (kitty), and Max(kitty).

There are wonderful stories of strange pairings among parrots, so it's always a possibility that your pionus and severe will like each other well enough to enjoy sharing play space, maybe even sleep space eventually. But it's definitely not the probability, and it's unwise IMO to cage them together until they've shown a great interest in being close. Both can get great pleasure from observing each other across the room, copying the other's activities and being each other's flock. Pionus are very cage territorial birds and will fiercely defend their cage.

With your love of a large family, it might be time to find a larger home
