Do birds get headaches?

Postby greylover on Mon May 12, 2008 12:43 pm

This may sound like an off the wall question but do birds get headaches?I swear my macaw had a headache yesterday as she kept shaking her head and was quietly sitting for a long period. If it hadn't been Sunday, I would have taken her into her avian vet. She is fine today.Odd.

A huge portion of a bird's head is sinuses, much more than a human's, so my guess is that a bird with a sinus infection could have a doozy of a headache. Birds handle pain very differently than humans, as a result of being prey animals. If they groaned and sighed and carried on as we often do, they would be calling predators to dinner. Sometimes they seem to go into a trance, much like a cat in labor, to deal with their pain.
