pterodactyl bird
I am new to this chat and wanted to offer some of my insights and experiences. I have a 11 year B&G female named Petri. I have learned how to live with a macaw through the school of hard knocks and bites.
I am responding to some messages I saw earlier in the year about Biting.
Pterodactyl bird happens on the 4th week of January. It starts as soon as the days start getting longer right after Christmas. I live in the Midwest. On day while minding her own business Petri screams, extends beak and wings and tries to tear apart what ever is in front of her. This usually starts the second week of January. The forth week, I don’t even want to be in the house. That is the week I will get bit to the point of drawing blood for doing nothing wrong. She also does the high pitch scream and nothing will stop it. After the forth week the screaming lessens and the out of control biting subsides. I know she is horney and is venting her frustrations. This behavior started when she turned 8 years old. I now put it on the calendar.
The best thing I found to deal with her during this time is one: play with her in my bed. She loves to burrow in the covers and get a belly rub. I know all of you think I am aggravating the issue. It calms her down and makes her happy. Yes I go through a lot of sheets, but it is cheaper than bird toys. She really likes the bedspread. Yes it has lots of holes in it.
The point of all this refers to perceived bad behavior and what is going on around them.
I have found I need to look at the environment to help determine why Petri is acting the way she does.
I first determine the time of year. Second the sounds around her, Third is smells. Usually I can figure out why she misbehaves.
Except for last night. She would not stop screaming. At 4 o’clock am we had an earth quack. Go figure.
Pay attention to what is going on around your bird and it will help you understand your bird a lot more.
