Re- Homing Mated Macaws

Postby chemsaf on Wed Apr 16, 2008 7:35 pm

Let me introduce myself -

I am a chemist who has been the parent parent to 2 macaws for 26 years. I got them when they were weaned - and they have been together ever since. They are a mated pair - go to http://www.sharneal.com/WIZARD%20SCOOTER/index.htm
to see them.
The male is a B&G - Wizard and the female is a Miligold - Scooter.
I have had the male DNA'd and the female lays lots of eggs, which I do not try to incubate.

Now the problem - I am reaching a point in my life such that caring for them is more than I can handle. So - how do I find a home for them?

I have tried local ads and they have not worked.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

thanks

    They are gorgeous!

Have you tried looking for any avian vets, bird clubs, or bird stores in the area who may be able to help you? You could also advertise them on forums and websites that allow advertisements..... such as here, or Avian Biotech, or BirdsnWays, Hoobly, etc.

...and I am less than convinced that this is a completely true story, without stating my reasons. If a regular member that I recognize wants to discuss it, we can do it via regular email thru this site.

Here is more information, based on the PMs I have received...

LOOKING FOR NEW HOME – Blue & Gold Macaw (male) and Miligold (Miltary x B&G) Macaw (female). 26 y.o. Have lived with me since they were weaned. Now I need to find them a new home. Must be familiar with handling large birds which require lots of attention. Not suitable for a family with young children. They live in a large aviary, but I will supply a large cage and several roll-around perches. We are willing to take time to find the right home.

I am asking for $1,000 for the pair, subject to the following. You must meet the birds several times. If we both find your home is an acceptable new home, then we will have a written agreement in which you will acquire them for one year. During that time, I will work with you to help with their care. If, anytime during the year you decide that you cannot handle them, I will take them back, but no money will be returned. If, at the end of one year, you decide to keep them, I will return $500.

My objective is to provide long term care for birds I truly love but to whom I no longer have the physical energy to care for.

We all live in San Diego.
