My greenwing who is eight months old got acutely sick last Saturday and I haven't a clue why. She's fine now but took two days to recover.It was about 3:00 and she suddenly became withdrawn,sleepy,puffed up and wanted nothing to do with me. I put her in her in her cage and she just sat there on one foot.In short, within 15 minutes she had a total personality change.I finally found an avian vet to see her(my vet is off on week-ends) and did a physical and said she looked fine.I had given her some cashews that day--maybe 5--and the vet thought it was a stomach ache.Has anyone experienced something like this? I know she didn't get into anything else as I am with her every minute when she is out. Thanks.

Has she had cashews before? Birds can have allergic reactions... I know macaws are sensitive to dust from dust species, but they'd show their sensitivity with a runny nose usually...

Thank-you for responding.Yes, she has had cashews before.The thought was that they have so much fat in them,it upset her stomach. I sure would like to avoid repeating this incident!

The Healthy Bird Cookbook says that cashews are low in fat...

If the cashews were not raw, i.e. they were sold for human consumption then it could have also been something that was put on the nuts themselves? Or they could have just been bad nuts?
