beak grinding

Postby JUNEBUG on Fri Jan 11, 2008 1:44 am

We have a B&G that we got about 3 weeks ago. He is 5 years old and a real treat to have We have not seen any bad habits yet until last night. When we put him in his cage for the night he starts making a noise that sounds like he is grinding his teeth or should I say beak. He has been to the vet and everything checked out ok and the vet said his feet and beak are fine.As I sit here I can hear him and it is driving me up the wall. Any help before I have to be scraped off the ceiling LOL

All of mine grind their beaks.

By far, the worst sounding is the Sennie. It's literally nails on a chalkboard to me! I crings when he does it!! But he's so happy and content. Usually I just leave the room for a few minutes and all is well!

The cockatoo isn't bad and the sound is actually comforting to me! The Pi and CAG are pretty quiet when they do it as well. But that dang Sennie!!

Beak grinding is a sign of contentment. Before I bought a house, I had a large apartment in an old house. My bedroom was the former parlor and didn't have a door, just a large archway. Since it was so big, larger than my living room, I kept the birds cages in there. I always liked listening to my two Greys and Triton grind their beaks at bedtime and found it comforting. I miss hearing them do that. My birds are on the main level, and the bedrooms are on the second so I don't hear them now.

Beak grinding is a sign of contentment. If they do not do this you should worry! You will get used to it. I actually feel really happy when my guys do it, it makes me feel good, I know they are happy and feel good. :D

Yes I agree! They are happy and content. If you think one B&G is bad try 8 (all Macaws, different types even) of them... ha ha ha. It sounds like they are in sync or trying to get in sync with each other. I generally use that sound to turn off the lights and put them all to bed. If you notice your bird will start to close their eye lids when they grind. Also check in on your Blue and Gold, when they grind you might (if your lucky and they are content ENOUGH) get a whiff of their sweet scent! This is heaven to me and other B&G owners, if you know what I mean. They give off their own aroma that is absolutely "Out of this World!" I wish they could bottle that stuff..... ha ha ha
