Hyacinth

Postby arschria12 on Tue Jan 01, 2008 9:29 pm

Hello my 4 year old Hyacinth screams a lot. I was wondering if there is a reason for this or maybe her diet is off. She is always out of her cage and she gets attention all the time. She has toys in her cage and lots of differen't kinds of nuts to eat all day long. If there is some ideas please let me know. Thanks

Unbappy?

Postby TheFrantom on Wed Jan 02, 2008 12:26 pm

All macaws are vocal, especially the larger species. One has to expect that if they wish to own a macaw. It goes with the territory. That is why it is so important for new bird owners to do their research and find out what the different parrot species are like before actually obtaining one too. Just shoving nuts at a bird will not stop its screaming. Human attention is important for larger, tame parrots. Or maybe the bird misses its previous owner? Then there may be nothing you can do except put up with the noise.

I have 2 smaller macaws. One is nice -- and the other is a "go for your eyes" bird and actually is rather dangerous to own. But they are both happy and healthy and I do not mind their "quirks". But I really prefer my smaller birds in the long run.

My B&G is out of her cage most of the time to .We have a window cage where she can go out and play is the sun .We also have a bird room so she cant rome the house Some days she will scream and scream . for no reason other than she like to scream or call back to the crows or mad at the neghbors dog barking or wants some attention. My friends macaws always scream when he picks up the phone. There doesnt have to be a reason Right now its raining and she is out playing and screaming and laughing.
Always love you bird as you love yourself or more.

Just an idea/thought on the toys...

What about trying some interactive toys, like the ones they have to work at to get a treat. I've heard these can keep some birds busy. Parrot Island has acrylic toys that are like a chest of drawers. A friend bought one for her B&G. She puts little treats, nuts, and toys inside, and her bird loved it. I'm not sure if it would hold up well with a Hyacinth, although her bird is pretty destructive. Anyway, maybe a toy that exercises his brain more would help keep him more occupied (and less noisy)?

Version 1 has more ideas for larger birds, while much of version 2 seems focused on smaller ones. Both are wonderful!

Birds are extremely sensitive to their surroundings. Twice when I was on the phone with someone and it was not a pleasant conversation, my Greenwing did not like that at all and started screaming herself.

A lot of times we might not even be aware of the discord we are creating when having a disagreement with our spouse/partner or even a child but the birds sure pick up on it and do not like it and you can have the screaming or feather plucking. Just a thought.

yelling

Postby TheFrantom on Wed Jan 02, 2008 7:01 pm

I agree with you there. And sometimes parrots just want ALL the attention, with no yelling going on in the background. My mother's amazon starts yelling EVERY TIME my mother picks up the phone in her rec room where the bird is. Ma has to go upstairs and re-call the person back. The bird is not that especially bonded with my mother, but evidently wants all of her attention when she is downstairs.

Fran you know I have been around birds all my life especially the big ones so please don't act like I don't know what I am doing. That is rude. I came on her for advice not for you to nip pick. We are the birds owner and you know that as well. I didn't say throw nuts in her face either. I said maybe is her diet off. Also don't pull that it is important for people to obtain information on the bird before getting that species. You know that bird was my moms bird so don't lie to people. Please leave me alone. Ever since you came on the website all you do is nip pick at me. Since you have this tension towards me please just don't post were I post, then there won't be anyproblems. Fran you also never worked with the big birds so you really shouldn't give advice. When you were with my moms rescue you only rescued the small birds.

But to everyone else thanks for the great advice.

Thanks my mom said that they were just calling to the other birds. Maybe that is why she screams sometimes. I found that when she screams I will try to figure out what is wrong and when she stops screaming is usually what she wants. It is almost like a baby they scream to try to tell you what they want and when you figure it out they stop screaming. I think mabye she is just trying to tell me something. Thanks for the advice everyone. She is something else. Her favorite thing is dancing.
