We went visiting

Postby featherfanatics@yahoo.com on Tue Dec 18, 2007 9:00 pm

Now that Calypso is getting settled in nicely I decided to take him out visiting my relatives. We stopped at my grandparents. I got Calypso out of his carrier and he automatically hid his head in my hair! We settled in on the couch and after a few minutes he snuck a peak at my grandma. Calypso made sure he kept his body very close to mine until he saw my grandma's coffee cup. Then he ventured to my knee to see if there was anything in there for him. My grandma offered him a drink of her water but he just ran back up my leg lol. We only stayed an hour or so. I didn't want to over do it. Hopefully in time he'll be comfortable going out in public with me. So far so good!

How do your birds handle going out in public?

I don't have any mawaws, but I'll give you my take on my four.

Sera, the G2, really enjoys it. But she's a 'too.

Uri, the Sennie, could care less as long as no one touches him and mommy holds him. He might step up to another woman if she's calm, but that's about it.

Gonzo, the BWP, would prefer to stay home. He's much happier there. He's my Zen bird.

Sophie, the CAG, is so interested in everything. She loves watching things and meeting new people.

We try to take all our birds out from time to time. They love the attention & as you said it helps keep them socialized.

I have two classrooms that want me to bring my birds in. I was wondering, when you take your birds out,do you worry about people petting them and infection of some sort?I was thinking about making eveyone wash their hands with an anti-bacterial towelette.

I used to take my birds with me at Thanksgiving and Christmas. My mom does Thanksgiving so there are usually a dozen or so people around. The birds always seemed to enjoy it. One of my Greys really likes to travel in the car. He will chatter quite a bit. The other Grey does okay, but she sometimes gets car sick.

I have taken my birds to a couple class rooms. I generally do not allow the kids to pet the birds. Sometimes their quick movements spook them, and even though my birds are pretty good natured, I also do not want to take a chance that anyone would get bitten.

If you do allow the kids to pet the birds, I would take along a bottle of antibacterial handwash and insist they use it first. They could have birds at home. Better to be safe than sorry. Just me being paranoid, but I lost one of my cockatoos. It wasn't a disease or anything contagious, but it was the longest three weeks of my life waiting for the necropsy results and worrying if my other birds would be okay.

I am so sorry to hear about your cockatoo. It is heart-wrenching to lose any pet.The only bird I would allow the kids to touch would be my macaw as I hold her beak. my amazon would take a finger off then laugh about it.Funny funny bird but she is quite a snot on occaison.

I have some questions about the antibacterial stuff, but it's lengthy, so I made a new post here. The short version is "Are you sure it's a good idea?"

Thanks! I still really miss her!

I would probably be most worried about a kid getting bitten or spooking the bird. My Grey would not tolerate a stranger petting him. He may say "NO" first, but I have no doubt that he would not hesitate to bite if he felt threatened. I can't remember exactly what happened the first time, but one child did spook my cockatoo, causing her to take off from my hand. It scared me because she could have flown into the windows on one side of the room. Even though I clip my birds wings, it is amazing how far and high they can fly when something startles them.

I do think it is a great idea though to take the birds to class rooms. It's a great opportunity to educate children about birds, their diets, etc.

Once Calpyso gets comfortable with going places and meeting new people I plan on taking him to different schools. It will be a look but don't touch thing. I want to start teaching kids young the proper way to take care of a bird!

good thinking more parents should want to teach their kids and themselves before buying a parrot no matter how small.

My B&G Josie likes to go for walks. She has always been a shy bird from the start. She like to go out in public but doesnt like the people. She is so funny in the van. she talks and sings in the van if I dont have the radio on and tells me no if I try to talk back or sing. She seems to talk more in the van than any other time. Josie wouldnt be a good bird to take in the class room But years ago I used to go give parrot talk to 2nd and 3rd graders I had a Amazon that loved kids and a S.I.Ekkie . They both would let any one pet them. Some birds are really into it. Mark
