Nuts

Postby arschria12 on Wed Dec 12, 2007 1:15 pm

I was told by my vet to give my hyacinth only 3 to 6 different kinds of nuts. Some people told me to give as much as she wants but she will eat the whole bag if she could. I think it is to high and fat.. I would like to know what other people think. Please let me know. Thank you.

Also my hyacinth will not talk and she is about 4 years old now. Do hyacinth's not talk or are they just stubborn.

If there is any info you would like to share with me about hyacinths it would be greatly appreciated.

Companion Parrot Quarterly Magazine by Sally Blanchard just featured the hyacinth macaw in this months issue. I found it really informative!

From what I read Hyacinths diet consists primarly of nuts as they require a diet with more fat and carbohydrates, and less protein, than other parrots, and their diet can be supplemented with small amounts of fruits, vegetables, and pellets formulated for Hyacinth Macaws.

Talking parrots

Postby TheFrantom on Wed Dec 12, 2007 10:02 pm

Not every parrot talks, no matter what species it is. From my parrot experience over the years, if the bird has not started talking within the first 5 years, most probably it will not. It may still pick up whistles, sounds, though..... :D

Your vet is correct.

Hyacinth's require these nuts, unlike any other bird. In fact these three different nuts are their stable (I thought it was one in particular, the macadamian but listen to her/him if they say the other two.) Disreguard at your own peril.

P.S.- write me with your e-mail address and I'll give you their complete diet recomendations and a private phone number for a PHD in Zoology (Dr. Michael) for reference if you need him. He is currently operating several wild feeding programs around the world but catches up on his cell messages very fast (good to have in a pinch- he specializes in Hyacinth's.)

Hyacinth Diet

Postby conniep on Thu Dec 13, 2007 1:38 pm

I have two Hyacinths, Goliath is 10 and Gia is 5. Both have "free will" macadamia nuts every day. They also have almonds, walnuts, pecans and hazelnuts in their nut-bowls but generally, the mac nuts are the preferred nut by both. They do require a diet higher in fat and lower protein than other parrot species as others mentioned. My two don't care much for fresh veggies & fruits (except bananas and apples) but they are still offered several times a week. One of their favorites, and also a great source of Vit A/beta-carotene are steamed/cooked yams/sweet potatoes and or/carrots. They seem to really enjoy their warm, cooked cubed yams! They also like a couple of cooked meals I make, one consists of Beak Appetit's Calypso Spice & Dr Harvey's cook meal and I add a jar of strained baby carrots to that which makes it a little more slurpy...they care for it better that way I guess. Occaisionally I will add scrambled or hard boiled egg to the top of that. They really don't care for legumes/grains/rices of any kind, which does have the higher proteins, so I stopped offering them. As far as dry foods go, which they also have in their bowls 24/7, they are given Dr Harvey's Exotic Parrot & Perfect Parrot blends (in my opinion, one of the best parrot foods on the market) as well as Goldenfeast Caribbean Bounty in addition to a basic seed blend mix and a couple TB of Zupreem Avian Maintenance pellets. I blend them all together for the added variety. There are alot of dried fruits in the Dr Harvey's mixes, which makes the diet higher in carbs/sugars so my Cockatoos don't get as much of that blend.

We can't duplicate the Hyacinths' diet which they enjoy in the wild but we can provide a diet that is still very nutritious and enriching by offering lots of variety. Remember, birds/parrots basically nibble on food all day long so its really important to give them food throughout the entire day. Hope this helps some. You can read more about my Hyacinths foods/activities on my website www.allforahorse.com

I give my Hyacinth plant pro Dr. D's pellets which is really good for the bird. My mom used that pellet for 20 some years and the birds love it. I have been giving them a scoop of nuts 2 times a day and was wondering if that is to much and I thank you guys for offering me advice.

Anyone has as right to post a reply, comment, or even go off the subject, as long as appropriate rules of behavior are in place. Your response that someone does not have that right is inappropriate and a reflection of your immaturity. Especially, if I remember correctly, that you promised never to post on this sight again, because you felt attacked.

The comment that was posted was on your question/comment about Hyacinths talking. The rest is a signature line, it has been on this person's posts on other threads too.

I don't have a Hyacinth, but I have read that they need a higher fat diet, but would talk to breeders and your vet about the correct ammount.
