Since this is an open forum, no one really has the right to state that
"if you don't like it or if you disagree, it's not your business to respond."
Bringing up any part of the topic regarding hybrids is ALWAYS going to be an invitation for a wide range of responses. If you cast the bait, you must be ready for whatever you end up catching. Then if it keeps up long enough, folks will get tired and bored, and start ignoring the bunch of folks who are being inappropriate.

Here is a pretty cool link explaining hybrid macaws and their temperment.
http://websbysmurphy.com/hybrid_macaws.htm
I found it very interesting even though I'm not a big fan of hybrids.

Harlequin.........

Postby caraparrots on Fri Sep 14, 2007 8:48 pm

I adore Harley's! I think they are the big, beautiful clowns of the Macaw world. They should all be named "Bozo"! Although they often behave more like monkeys.......swinging from toy to toy up-side down, rather than right-side up!

Criminal?? IMO the man that declared war on Iraq is a criminal. Ah....but that's another "forum".

Re: Harlequin Macaw?

Hi Amy,
Harlequin macaws seem to be the favorite of all of the hybrid macaws. They tend to have the easiest going temperment of all macaws, are large, most are beautiful to look at, and for the most part, make excellent companion birds. They can be excellent talkers, too. They make a much more desirable pet than any of your Scarlet or Military hybrid combinations, which tend to be more high strung, nippy and less manageable as they mature. This information comes to you from someone adament against hybrid breeding, so you know I am being sincere.

All the Best,
Mary X

Harlequin macaw

Postby ozie.nelson on Tue Sep 25, 2007 10:28 am

Hi Amy,
I am sure by now you have your new macaw. In Feb. 2007 I rescued a six month old Harlequin. She was in terrible shape. Her owner was planning on using her for future breeding. She was kept in a not fit for a small conure cage. Her tail and wings had not developed and she knew nothing but being afraid. I named her River. She is my River Dee Dee
She checked out OK at the vet, a little under weight. It took a lot of time but she is one of the smartest macaw I have and I have 22. Her tail and wings are beautiful and talks better than my Blue&Gold "Steven" and he talks really well. She she has trouble trusting and stepping-up but does it and has never once took a bite. Everyday she is getting closer to me and gets along well with all my other macaws. Although I do have a Green-wing "Ringo" who is a a bit pushy.
I am so glad I took a chance with her, she is perfect. Send me your e-mail and I will send you pictures of my family of wings.
Sincerely,
Cheri McMillin parrot8@bellsouth.net

All the best to you and the Harley if you decide to adopt him :-).

I have never met a Harlequin Macaw, however, I personally know a Miligold, a Ruby, a couple of Shamrocks, a few Camelots (one of them is mine), a Rubalina (don't ask me--RubyxCatalina??), and several Catalinas. From my experience, they're like purebred Macaws--each individual is different, within the limitations set by genetics, age, health, upbringing and environment. If the Harley likes you and you two have established a bond, you'll probably never regret bringing him home, as long as you're willing to be patient and work on any "issues" he might have.

If you get him, I look forward to seeing photos :-).

We have an 8 month old Harlequin named Jewel. I knew nothing about hybrids when we got him and was surprised about the strong feelings that they evoke. He is an absolute lover and started talking at 6 months. Jewel loves "the baby" (rolls onto his back in our arms), snuggles and actually hugs us with his wings. He is the most loveable bird I have ever met and will cuddle with almost anyone. Ocassionaly he will sleep with us, yes, in our bed, and promply goes night-night after grooming my eyebrows, eyelashes and giving me wet willies. His flock consists of a Scarlet, African Grey, Yellow Nape, long haired chihuahua, hubby and myself. They all go to work with us (we own and operate a charter offshore fishing business) and meet strangers at the dock on a daily basis. They go shopping, banking, running errands and for walks with me regularly. Jewel is the least likely to nip and runs a close second to Ruby (Scarlet) in clowning. Our babies are not for breeding, just part of our family and we can't imagine life without them.
