Weaning baby mccaw

Postby cftexas on Thu Jul 19, 2007 11:20 am

I have been dropper feeding a new hatched mccaw for three weeks. I am new at this out of desperation since I found him out of the nest on the ground on his back for all night. He is doing great but when do I start to teach him to feed on his own. Thank you.

What kind of macaw? If he is only 3 weeks you have a long way to go. What do you mean by dropper feeder, eye dropper? and if so is he getting enough to eat?????

If you dont know what you are doing, Please find people who do know how to correctly handfeed and wean. This is not something one should do never having done it before.

feeding baby mccaw

Postby cftexas on Sat Jul 21, 2007 5:30 pm

The baby is gaining and starting to put out his feathers. I feed him with a large medicine dropper till his crop looks full. I feed him now as he wakes up and starts to chirp loudly about every three hours day and night. He is so loving and likes to be rubbed all over especially under his wings. He has grown so much and I am letting him walk around and he trys to hold onto my hand like a perch. So far so good.

not to bring back an old thread But I have to say something here.
First, Thank you for coming to a forum like this to find someone that can help you! that was a great first step.

Second, I would have suggested calling one of your local avian vets and if you don't have one ask here for one that is known regionally for you.

Third if all else fails I would give you my home number in private msg or email so we may talk because it is easier for me to explain to someone how to hand feed with voice then it is online. Beyond what some people think out there hand feeding isn't rocket science it just takes someone to explain it carefully to you and a lot of patience and time on your part.

Fourth and this is to Featheredangel who said this...
If you dont know what you are doing, Please find people who do know how to correctly handfeed and wean. This is not something one should do never having done it before.

please get off your soap box and politely help the person with polite suggestions. and if you think this is beneath you to help them because you know how and they don't then don't respond. This as i read it wasn't something they wanted to do this way but kinda had to.
and last but your wording. "this is not something one should so never having done it before." that just don't make any sense! Anyone here on this msg board that has hand fed, didn't do it before at one point in their life INCLUDING YOU. [/b]
