I'm just stopping in for a quick reply. I'll get back to more info later. Gotta get my birds ready for bed.

Megabacteria is actually yeast. It has been formally renamed to reflect that. You can do a google search on Dr. Phalen and megabateria and probably come up with a lot of info.

Hi Darlene I was raising a B&G 2 years ago and a breeder I knew them told me that macaw babies are very likely to get yeast infections, when using hand fed formula. He told me to use Nystatin and add it to the formula. I hand to get a prescription from a doctor to get it . He told me to add it to the water that you mix the formula with . To start it at six weeks and use it till weined. 105 ml. per oz of water .At about 50 day she started getting fusy about eating. She lost from 1165 gr at 50 days to 1060 at 72 days They do that in nature to loose some baby fat to get ready to fly. Good luck with your baby. mark

I've heard of this happening before in other species... it's possible that your macaw had this when she was born and around other birds, or that you handled a bird that had the bacteria, then handled your macaw?

I was going to suggest something like yeast or bacterial issues (which can actually be from being handfed) in your last thread, however you had already been to the vets and back. If indeed this is what your macaw has, then she needs to be treated for it immediately, not something to wait it out. I've heard it can be a serious issue.

Best of luck to you and your macaw! I hope she pulls through fine!

Avian Gastric Yeast

Postby PurpleHeart on Wed Jul 11, 2007 11:53 am

http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index ... 170212.htm

This link will prove to be very resourseful in the future. Go to the topic heading (cage birds) and save in your favorite places for future reference. The Merick Vet Manual is the very same one used by vets all over and will help you in many more problems or incidences that may pop up.

The page I book marked will help you with you have right now.

Did you get the order in for Ultimate?

Did you tell your Vet you had placed an order for Ultimate?

I thought that is what you had to begin with. When you do not have a clean out period there remains food (your formula) that is unused. No matter how clean you make your formula there always can be problems. Like I said before I also make my own formula and use it till a problem comes up. This is when I put my babies back on commercial formula and use the Ultimate. when this arrives you will be able to read the directions and use accordingly.

If your vet does not know about Ultimate tell me and I'll give him/her the personal phone number of Dr. Michael who invented it.

Weight at 10 weeks

Postby PurpleHeart on Wed Jul 11, 2007 12:15 pm

I just ran a comparison of all of my GW babies and they come in from 1000-1020grams at 10 weeks.

So having the extra weight during this time is a good thing!

The infection usually eats at the weight and the first indication is weight LOSS! So you have given your baby a little wiggle room to recover before this becomes a health issue.
