Help!

Postby rj on Sat Jun 09, 2007 9:58 am

Hello, I have a 19 day old blue and gold macaw that has stifle luxation. The bones at the knee do not meet, they over lap. The vet put him under anesthesia to stretch the ligaments and try to get the bones to meet. It was unsuccessful, four days after she did it , it was right back the way it started. They have no more help for me there ( although they didn't hesitate to charge me full price, including the recheck which was supposed to be a bandage change!) she recommended a vet in Chicago. As it is, his leg is splayed and points forward because he's not strong enough to stand on the other one yet. Anyone ever had any experience with this? Thanks, Rhonda :(

I'm sorry....I've only had one B&G, and he came home with me when he was 4 months old. Knock on wood...he's never been ill. Good luck, I hope you are able to find some help and some answers. I'm presuming the vets you are seeing are avian vets. Perhaps a vet school in the area may have some help, they are usually into hi-tech and advanced treatments.

Where in Michigan are you located. My vet is very good and has some great connections with some of the best in the country. PM me if you would like his name.

Help

Postby ozie.nelson on Mon Jun 18, 2007 9:07 pm

Hi,
I am new to macaw connection, but have visited quite often. I am the proud owner/mom of 21 macaws. I have seen and learned a lot about all parrots, mostly macaws. I have dealt with splayed legs, this is totally different. I am sorry. Your baby B&G is 19 days old, is that right? Please reply before I go any further and let me know if you still have baby.

Sincerely,
Cheri

Thanks to all of you. I found a wonderful vet Dr. Beasley in Williamston Michigan. Sadly I had to put my baby down. His problems were more involved than just the leg. I have to remind myself that the pleasure they bring us is far greater than the pain. Rhonda
