stinky poops

Postby Leea on Sun May 06, 2007 11:31 pm

I am babysitting a Macaw. I feed him more fruit and veggies than his owner. He also likes some of whatever I am eating. Anyway over time his poops seem to have gotten a whole lot more stinky. If I make eat more pellets like his owner will it go back to the way it was?
thanks
Lee

In my experience, it's caused by a bacterial infection. If you'll have the bird more than another few days, you might want to phone her vet for advice.

Could also be a yeast infection. Please don't give him anything like ACV or probiotics because it might skew the results of a gram stain. Hopefully the owner will consent to taking the bird to the vet soon.

Hi,

A few drops of Apple Cider Vinegar in the birds drinking water will clear up a minor yeast infection. Make sure it is "Bragg brand" apple cider vinegar. If the smelly poops do not clear up in a couple of days a vet visit is in order.

There are many good links online to the benefits of ACV for avian use, do a google search.

I use to own a bird store for 10 years in Indy and once in a while we would get greenwings, which were on pellets having that foul smelling poop. So I would give these birds a seed diet and take them off of pellets for a week and this cleared them up. It was like the pellets were to rich for their system and it didn't matter what the brand was. All of the other suggestions are right and you will have to figure out what seems to be the best for you and the bird that you are caring for. Also I hope that you have a good bird vet in your area if you need them to do a bacterial swab for you.
