Pairing up macaws

Postby mainmusic on Sun Apr 01, 2007 1:13 pm

We have 2 unrelated Greewing Macaws both have been pets of ours from 2 weeks old. They are now 10yrs and 11yrs SS Male and Female. Both have cages in the same room and when we have them out to play the Male is very protictive of the Female to the point that he will go after us. We are going to pair them for breeding and are looking for hints on how to introduce them to the same cage and any problems we could run into.

They're already friends, right?

I don't know, but with my greys, I let them both keep their "own" cage and built a little tunnel/passageway between their two cages and connected them. That way they both get to keep their own space yet be together if they feel like it. It's been that way for several years. I'm sure they could share one cage now, if they felt like it, but I just keep it the way it is because it's part of their little territory and too much trouble to move one cage out of the house LOL.

If you can spare the space, it's like a double-size condo :)
