Weening to Pellets

Postby TimTatko on Sun Mar 18, 2007 8:09 pm

I have had my baby blue and gold macaw for about two weeks now and I am trying to ween him from cheerios to small pellets/roudibush. I am also giving him fresh fruit which he will eat occasionally. How long does it usually take for the bird to start eating pellets? I have been giving him mixes with the pellets in it around 75% Cheerios and 25% pellets. When should I give up and go with seed possibly?

When we wean- we only use Zupreem pellets and give dried fruit and very little seed mixture as a snack/ treat only. We also try little chopped brocolli, carrots, cranberries- but dried fruits as they wont drink as they should with fresh fruits. And water bottle at that.

In my opinion birds should have a varied diet. Fruits, veggies, seed, sprouts, nuts (esp caws), human foods and maybe some pellets. I don't think any bird should have too much human cereal. There is too much iron for them.
Try eating with him, offering some good food/fruits, making a big scene about how good everything is with plenty of hmms and the like. They are flock animals and tend to eat together. My crew all stop whatever they are doing and eat when husband and I eat.

try putting some pellets into birdy bread; that can help make the transition to pellets easier...

Hi Tim How old is your B&G. First ,If your baby is eating I would take away the cheerios.Alot of cheerios is not good for your bird. The way I feed is nut, pellet, dry fruit, about a 1/4 cup a day. In the second bowl I put fresh fruit, Apples, oranges, grapes, bananas, mango, canalope with vegies ,sqaush, brocali, corn, green beans. I dont put all of this at once . What I do is put two or three kinds of vegies and fruit with some cooked rice or pasta. peanuts butter on toast. I warn up the vegies also. I give some scramgled eggs some time. I chop it all up about the size of corn. As my baby got bigger I started giving corn on the cob and now I cut things up about a half inch. I dont give the samething everyday. I mix it up so she, my B&G wont get board.Dont leave fresh food in all day. Macaws are suppose to have a high fat diet. Just a pellet diet for Macaws can be too high in protein ,which can damage their kidenys. Josie also like to eat warm people food and even some cooked meat. I give her walnuts for snacks or rewards .I had to crack them for her the first year. I hope this will help you If you have any other questions ,we will be here to back you up. Mark
Always love you bird as you love yourself or more.
