Macaw Question Ring Toe

Postby TimTatko on Tue Feb 06, 2007 9:55 pm

I will be getting a Macaw in about 6-8 weeks when it is ready to go. The one foot has a very small portion that was cut off from something called ring toe. Will this affect the coordination of the bird?

In the long run it should not bother him. If he is a baby did you ask how he got this "ring toe". it sounds suspiscious to me. Have you sen the aviary he is coming from? I would have a health check done quickly on him and find out if they have return policy. I would hate for you to get a sick bird.

babies should be vetted before they are sold, and when you purchase take right to vet and get blood work and all that they need done, this protects you and bird. This way every year when you take him in he has a record and you know what is going on with him. I know with 10 it is costly, but the piece of mind knowing far out weighs the cost. Ask the breeder these questions and then talk with an Avain vet before purchasing also ask for breeders referances- people who have purchased before, and get some feed back from people who have dealt with them. Any breeder will be happy to provide names and numbers and if they wont- thats a sign, be careful.

They are probably talking about constricted toe syndrome, which is where a band of skin around the toe stops growing and constricts the toe so there is no circulation. It is thought that in a baby bird, it is caused by not enough humidity in the nest box/brooder. If it is noticed early it can often be repaired before the baby loses a toe.

The missing part of toe won't cause any problems. Your baby won't even know he's supposed to have it and will adapt well.
