Sneezing

Postby coyote on Sun Dec 17, 2006 8:02 pm

Hi I am fairly new here although not new to parrots.
I have a recently purchased Greenwing who I have noticed sneezing the past couple of days. No discharge or other signs of illness, just sneezing. He did have a post purchase exam by my vet but no bloodwork was done just a fecal...
Should I be worried?

Is he sneezing a lot or just periodically? If he's not continually sneezing, and there is no nasal discharge or other signs of an illness he probably is OK. If its constant or it seems to be getting worse, then I would definitley call the vet. Keep us posted.

It could be that he's drinking too fast and gets some up in his "nose." Check to be sure there aren't any irritants in the air, candles, new perfumes, etc. If it continues over the next week or so I'd take him in.

Upper respiratory infections, especially low-grade ones, are fairly common in captive birds because of the condition of the air in the house. Especially in winter, when their respiratory system can become dry and irritated, giving bacteria a chance to get a foothold.

You might also try a humidifier in the vicinity of his cage. Just be sure to keep it free of mold and mildew.

Just an added note because I found myself embarassed by this. Schreech had been sneezing quite a bit and I was worried. I took him to the vet and he never sneezed the entire time we were there. LOL! The doc said everything appears to be normal, any chance he was just making the sneezing noise.. and my brain when DUH!!!! That was exactly what was happening upon thinking about it in greater detail. My honey's allergies had been bugging him and he'd been sneezing a lot.. Schreech just wanted to join in.

I am not saying this to say, do not be worried. I am only saying in my particular case, it was a false alarm!

Hi coyote My B&G sneezes from time to time. I open the window and air out the room . If you dont have a air purifier in your bird room you might think of getting one. Mark
