I am a little confused by your post....are you wanting to pair your macaw up with a mate and let them have babies for life....or are you wanting to pair your macaw up long enough for her to produce a clutch of babies for you and then seperate the pair so she will become a full time pet again?

I cant say its true from experience, but from what I have been told and from things I have read...I think its difficult to turn a breeder back into a pet...I think they are USUALLY best off as either one or the other. If you found a mate for your macaw and they bonded and had babies together...it would be cruel to take the mate back away from her again in my opinion.

We currently have several pairs that are both pets and breeders. One of our pairs of Sun Conures lets Jeremy give them kisses in the nest box even when they have babies, our other pair of sun conures love me to death and will ride on my shoulder around the house. We also have a Yellow Nape female that is the sweetest and tamest of all our birds, she loves to ride around on our shoulders but she also loves to be a breeder. Some of our most prolific pairs are also some of our tamest pairs that love to let us love up to them. So yes, speaking from experience pets can also be breeders....or breeders can also be pets, however you want to look at it.

Not all birds will want to be both, we have had a few pairs that were bought as proven that once they met us they decided they didnt want to be a breeder anymore but would rather be a pet. A perfect example is a pair of Senegals we had, they had given us babies as well as the previous owner. Well, the male fell in love with me and Jeremy and turned mean to his mate, he got to where he would attack her when we were around. So we had to split the pair up, we kept Clyde the male that fell in love with us and he is now our full time pet. We paired the female "Cricket" back up with a male that was a pet but decided to be a breeder and they are now totally happy in love!

Well, thats our experience with pet breeders.
