My bird seems sick. Need advice asap

Postby vicinyoface on Wed Mar 03, 2010 6:59 pm

So this is weird i have been looking all over the internet but haven't found anything to help me. I have a b/g macaw who is gonna be 1 yr old on the 17th of this month. Last night he started acting very strange. He was fluffed up and very hyper... flapping and running around his cage, rolling etc. It was late but I thought he wanted to play because that's how he gets. But it started to look different, i took him out to give him space because i was concerned and he was still running around. His pupils were getting small and big over and over and he looked really disoriented. He was barely able to walk straight and couldn't focus at all (he was still very hyper) I wouldn't have been so concerned if he didn't seem so disoriented and fluffed. Usually when he plays he gets like that except the dizzy looking running, it didn't look like he was playing and hes reaction time/depth perception was very off (scary). I wanted to call a vet or something but it was about 10:30 at night (usually he is pretty calm by this time). Anyway within a few minutes it passed and he went back to normal and has been since then. Now i am scared to play with him because i don't want it to happen again. Has anyone seen this before??? I'm really scared and don't know what to do. If it is a serious emergency i will do whatever it takes to help my little guy. Please help i hope its nothing.

p.s. he pooped on my carpet when i took him out and it seemed like a normal one, his cage is clean and so is he. I think this happened briefly once before a month or 2 back. thought he was just playing again

once again if anyone can help i would appreciate it. thanks!
Sincerely,
Vic

Your instincts are better than any opinions we could ever dish out. I hope it's still early enough in your time zone to get your bird to an avian vet. (If it's after office hours, my vets have info on their answering machines about the closest emergency avian vet.) If he's still okay and it's evening there, I'd get him vetted tomorrow for sure. What you're describing doesn't sound normal to me, but I'm not a vet. It sounds neurological, but I'd want a vet giving me advice -- fast.

Must have missed this one on the origional posting, and picked it up when christy asked how things were going.

Barring anything medical (rule out with annual exam by an Avian Vet)

Sounds like night tremors to me. Our birds get them and unlike dreams (something that humans do through- REM) birds have night tremors. Described as one moment sleeping and then waking up quickly from a sound or distrubance. And I will repeat, birds do not dream!

Television sounds are most frequent result of these tremors but can be the still and silence of his/her room and then some thing far off or even unheard by us (humans) They have impecable hearing and sight! I use to have a Hawk screach nearby and it alerted my birds even though I never heard it (at first) I investigated and found out the cause of these night tremors.

I would not be so concerned about this activity of your Macaw if it goes on a few times a year. However, if it happens constantly I would evaluate the sounds and placement of the cage and his/her enviroment; IE, placement in or around TV's, computers, activity in the household?
