noisy macaw

Postby vicinyoface on Thu Nov 05, 2009 3:58 pm

hi, so my 8month old b/g gets pretty loud when he is in his cage and it is only getting worse. he doesn't scream too too much but he sometimes does, mostly he climbs all around his cage and bangs his stuff around. he really makes alot of noise and will do it for hours. i try not to cave into his demands but it gets pretty obnoxious. also makes me feel bad like am i not paying enough attention to him (which in the end im pretty sure i am) I know when i got him he would be noisy as most are, but this seems like it can be stopped. Any ideas on how so stop this noise? you can hear it on other floors it gets so loud.
Sincerely,
Vic

Cut up fresh clean 2 x 4's (not wolmanized or green wood) in small squares and sting it through a coat hanger and let him chew chew chew. Sounds to me like a typical active B & G Juvenile, needing more things to keep his mind active. They also have a huge urge to chew wood and destroy things around this time of the year for some reason. Keep it up and he will adjust fine.

Also just a side note, do you feed him any meat?

You realize they do eat meat in the wild. When they get agitated (in my house that is) is when they haven't had meat in a awhile. Now I'm not saying this is the case for every Macaw, or every owner, but it seems to tame the savage beast in mine from experience. That is why I asked.

Most people think that because they are a parrot all they eat is vegetarian. But in the wild they feed very regularly on lizards, snakes and bugs in their normal diet of fruits and nuts. We try the best that we can as aviculturists to feed our parrots a balanced diet based on what we think they need physically and physiologically. But our parrots tell us a different thing everyday so its wise to watch and learn from your bird and try new and different things to make them happy.

Feeding meat every now and then is not a problem its only if you "over-feed" them when problems can occur. Try it and see if that will calm him down, I know for sure he will watch you from now on and when you come close to the cage he will definitely be "interested" in what goodies you are bringing him.

Mine eat chicken, steak, even pork, all well cooked and prepared not raw! One of their favorites is KFC chicken and the new grilled has quickly become their treat. I can't even walk in the house when they smell it coming from the bucket I bring home. So try a small piece and go from there.

Thats so funny Purple Heart. Josie is the same .She love the KFC chicken legs and even chews on the leg bones .She splits the bones and eats the inner out of it. She also love pork chops bone with a little meat on them. As you said WELL COOKED.
Always love you bird as you love yourself or more.

wow thats pretty nuts. i knew they ate meat but thought it had to be like plane cooked no flavors or anything added to it. he does like chicken and the KFC idea is a real good one that im gonna try. so ill fool around with it see what he likes and get back with the outcome. hope it works thanks!

just one question... what about like a bbq chicken type thing... is all that bbq sauce good for him or?

Everything has its moderation, sure why not tomato sauce (BBQ) I regularly feed spaghetti with sauce (pasta) to all of my birds.

And like Markey said above the bone marrow is always a favorite and is a good souse of nutrition.

I once in a while feed our birds chix or chops but have never done the drumstix deal. I'm going to have to try that.

    Thanks everyone. Great info!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, drumsticks are their absolute favorite!

Not only is there just about the right amount of meat, but then they have the opportunity to eat the bone where they get all that good marrow from!

Only thing is that I have too many Macaws and there is never enough drumsticks in the bucket.... ha ha ha. So I use the large (single bone side) of the wing at times to substitute. Especially when I am particularly hungry (I like the drumstick also... ha ha ha)

We only have two so I guess I'll steal the drumstix from the boy & make him eat something else. I just may have to go to KFC tonite for dinner. You think their grilled chix would work too?

Yep, that's what I get now, and they love 'em.

I haven't eaten fried since they came out with Grilled. My Macaw's like the new style as well.
