Thinking about Getting a Macaw!

Postby Whistler on Thu Sep 24, 2009 8:51 am

Hi Everyone,
I have run across a beautiful Blue & Gold Male Macaw that is very tame.
Talks a lot sings, dances, etc. Seems like a very well adjusted smart and healthy bird. He is 20 years old.
I currently own one other bird a Male Cockatiel named Whistler. He is 13 years old and really has become very close to me. I have him out all the time I can and he hangs mostly on my shoulder. He feels more like a family member than a pet. I have always wanted a Macaw and now this opportunity to get what seems like a great one without any issues has come up.
I have studied a lot about Bird Nutrition, Behavioral enrichment, etc. I know about the commitment of owning a bird, etc. Those things don’t scare me as long as Whistler is happy.
My biggest Question is what kind of an adjustment am I and of Course Whistler looking at if we decide to add a new friend.
Whistler is just a wonderful bird so I really do not want him to think he is 2nd to the Macaw.
Any suggestions about this subject would be appreciated. I have had some Experience handling larger birds but not a lot either.

I've had only 4 macaws -- 2 B&Gs and 2 RFs, so I'll let more experienced folks answer your qxs about living with a macaw. I want to warn you about Whistler's safety. If he or the macaw is flighted, you'll need to be concerned about NEVER letting them have physical access to each other. This includes not flying to each other, like when one's on you and the other wants to be, and not flying onto each other's cage. Even if not flighted, they need to be prevented from climbing onto each other's cage. This requires a LOT of supervision and probably allowing only one out of the cage at a time. This can feel VERY bad for such social, flock animals, so it's worth thought beforehand.

Glad you're asking qxs. Good luck!

Hi How are you? I have a 4yr. B&G female. When I got her I had a senegal parrot also. My B&G would chase the senegal if they were out at the same time. Josie my B&G is the most fun bird Ive ever had.I had to rehome my senegal because when josie was out of her cage and tommy was in his cage she would go over to his cage and climb all over it and scare him.Not all birds are the same. best luck
Always love you bird as you love yourself or more.
