Showers

Postby swindiana57 on Wed Sep 23, 2009 5:02 am

We have two macaws, a B & G & a green wing. The shower we have is fairly large & has two opposing shower heads. Well we put up a couple of Sandy Perch shower perches & the birds love to sit in the shower while the wife & I take our morning shower together. However the GW Quincy has discovered that he likes to be on the floor & run around in the spray. He just loves this & gets absolutely soaked from beak to tail tip. The other Jasmine the B&G hates that but loves to let you hold her on her back & put her under the spray.

Does anyone find either of these behaviors odd?

If anyone has other ideas for birdy shower fun please share with us!

Hi Chris My B&G loves to climb on my shoulder when I go into the shower, I put my arm out in front of me and she will run into the spray then back out . Sometimes she will get soaked other time she will get a little wet. One of my friends has two B&Gs that like to be on the bottom of the shower and they love to get soaked also. Ive had other parrots over the years that also like the shower. Have a good day Mark

i have a blue and gold who also loves to stay on the floor, spread his wings and run in and out of the spray as he pleases. its as if he actually knows how to get every inch of him wet so i let him do what he wants. it gets him clean and gives him a good time while doing it so i cant complain. plus he LOVES and i mean loves the hair dryer, although i heard its not good for his feathers. i saw let them do what they want.

question for you... do u use any soap and if so what kind? i was looking for one to use and dunno if i can even use any.
    Sincerely,
    Vic

That's pretty much what my GW does, in & out & back in.
No in fact I have two shower perches (Sandy's) that I put him on & wait until we are done washing & shampooing & all the suds are down the drain before I let him on the floor.

    Mark,

Parrots & showers just seem to go together don't they.

We have an outdoor aviary & on warm summer days they love to be out there if it's sprinkling. It's covered but some rain gets in the sides & they just have a great time playing, laughing & of course screaming (playfully of course).

In general, it's not a good idea to use soap of any sort on parrots. It can remove the oil from their feathers and possily lead to dry skin. Hair dryers are not recommended because they can also lead to dry skin. One has to be careful with hairdryers however, as some may contain PTFE or may be an ionizer.... neither of which are safe for birds.

As far as soap goes, the only ones that are recommended would be Johnsons Baby Shampoo (most often used on birds coming from a smoking home to a smoke-free home, and even then, not very frequently at all), as well as some parrot specific shampoos. They have them for a couple of different species.

If there is no reason to use soap or shampoo on birds, it's best to use 100% water. Mixing in aloe vera juice into the water can even be soothing to some birds, but again, not something you want to use frequently as it can build up on the feathers and possibly cause irritation.
